Wilder has way too many flaws in his fundamentals to deal with a young, hungry, fundamentally sound fighter like Tyson was back in the day.

Mile also was underrated in terms of his movement too which would give Wilder fits since he has been feasting for 8 years on a steady diet of landscapers and club fighters who just walked right up to him and stood there waiting to be hit.

Plus Wilder hates when punches come back at him and the one thing even a shot Tyson was good at was throwing punches.

Tyson was straight-up terrifying. The look in Spinks’ eyes in that clip up there tells the whole story. He’s the last guy I remember honestly thinking might kill someone in the ring.

I think that’s what people forget, because peak Tyson’s punches were so ferocious. He had solid fundamentals and excellent coaching, at least early in his career. When you watch his early videos now, I’m surprised at how fast and agile he was, and I saw most of his early fights. Wilder is too big, too slow, and doesn’t have the jab he would need to keep Tyson at bay the way Douglas did.

I don’t see this fight lasting four rounds, and if it’s preceded by this level of shit-talking the way Tyson-Spinks was, it might end in 1.

I don’t even think this guy could beat Piston Honda, much less other greats like Soda Popinski and King Hippo, so he would have never had a chance to even try to beat peak Tyson.

Maybe with a madcatz controller. Seriously, though: This clown? Iron Mike Tyson (The Champ)? Smart money’s on The Champ, all day.

Maybe—maybe—Peak Muhammad Ali could have eluded Peak Iron Mike and won a decision on points. But absolutely no one would have taken those uppercuts and won.

When Ali was on old Arsenio Hall and they brought out Sugar Ray Leonard and a young Tyson, Arsenio asked him who could beat him out of the top boxers of the day and Ali said Tyson would. It was an awesome moment and an AWESOME interview:

History will decide your place among the all-time greats so go out there, clean up the division, defend your title, reign supreme and your work will speak for itself.

This is such a great quote from Lennox Lewis.

Lewis may be the smartest heavyweight champion there ever was. I always liked him and hated that the division was such a joke when he was at the top.

Do you need to send him that Youtube video? Does he know who 1986 Mike Tyson is? Thank you for that video. I saw all those fights early in Tyson’s career and dude was THE Beast not A but THE. Nobody wanted any parts of dude in his prime.

He’s not even the best current heavyweight! Admittedly I’m not as into boxing as I used to be so I could be wrong but in my eyes Anthony Joshua is the better fighter. I guess if they ever fight each other we’ll all find out.

Wow. Thank you Stephen for this and the video of young Tyson. “Ferocious” is the word, and Lewis’ response to Wilder is so eloquent.

Watching the clip and reading your article: I now remember when and why I liked boxing then ...and do not now.

Does anyone know why Mike Tyson stopped training with Kevin Rooney? Or is the answer the same with everything that went wrong with Tyson: Don King?
