Cuffed a seven year old. Think about that.

    Seven.

Resetting the bar for “a danger to the officer and the public and at risk of fleeing orderly arrest” to a new all-time low.

    Dear Miami-Dade,
If your officers have trouble controlling a seven year old, or perhaps fear for their safety in risking battery by a seven year old, perhaps a review of hiring and training practices is in order.

So this chick couldn’t restrain a 7 yr old? Even if he was hitting her she’s in charge of a classroom and cant’ restrain a 7 yr old, then they haul the child away in cuffs? Oh and if he didn’t want to eat, she didn’t have anything else sto do besides monitor what he was eating? As long as he wasn’t causing a disturbance, throwing food, whatever, go find something to do. You won’t ever catch me living in FL or TX, the worst.

1, have you ever seen a seven year old boy fight? They are all flailing arms and legs.

2, what would you have a non related, adult stranger do to restrain the kid? The article already said that he was already restrained, but continued to fight and caused them both to fall.

This kid attacked an adult because she said, “if you’re not going to eat it, throw it away”. The parents should be way more concerned about what is going on with their son that he thinks this type of reaction is acceptable.

Handcuffing a 7 year old is some hardcore “scared straight” type stuff, but honestly a 7 year old shouldn’t be assaulting a teacher.

Uhm, I’ve raised 3 boys, I know how to restrain a 7yr old. Perhaps I would feel more sympathy towards her if she wasnt’ talking about pressing charges against a SEVEN year old and also the boy being handcuffed.

Yeah but unless you’re specifically trained putting your hands on a kid opens yourself up to tons of liability. You aren’t even supposed to pull kids apart when they’re fighting.

Well, he apparently hit her in the back while she was talking to another (presumably full time) teacher. Doesn’t seem like it warrants charges vs calling parents, detention and maybe some visits w/ the school counsellor though.

The teacher claimed that she “wanted to press charges,” stating that “her back was hurting,” even though there weren’t any visible injuries from the incident.

    Girl.

Yeah substitute teachers should go into work expecting to be punched have their hair pulled etc. Totally normal.

They got cuffs that fit 7 year olds? Jesus... The psych evaluation is what gets me. That’s too far. Could’ve made it a teaching moment by putting the boy in the back of the cruiser until he calmed down, let him know that hitting people is illegal and he will get in trouble for it, then let the parents take it from there.

A psych evaluation makes a lot of sense honestly. Maybe they’ll get to the root of what the kids issues are.

They probably handcuffed him above the elbows.

This that “lovely” zero tolerance policy bs in action. Meant for black kids (cause school to prison pipeline, you know).

Yes a 7 year old should be restrained at school. Taken to the principal’s office and talked to. Yet kid today come to school with myriad of issues and school adminstrators have their hands tied because of laws.

Probably less issues than in the past now that we’ve (we HAD, I guess) mostly eliminated lead from children’s diets/homes, sex abuse is (more) talked about and there are appropriate therapies etc. (Aside from this rash of adult punishments for childish offenses.)

I’m thinking back in the day if a kid hit a teacher he or she would be paddled, perhaps sent home, and that would be the end of the story.

Depends on how far back in the day you’re talking about. Corporal punishment was definitely out by the end of the 70s.

Lead in children’s diets? Where did you hear that from.

No adminstrators are facing more issues today than in the past.

According to ABC News, the first-grader was escorted out of a Miami-Dade police cruiser’s backseat while wearing handcuffs as his mother videotaped the incident and tried to comfort him while a uniformed officer took the child into the Miami Children’s Hospital for a non-voluntary psychiatric evaluation.

My expectations are so low for the police and public schools, I’m actually surprised they didn’t take this child to juvenile detention.

My teacher spidey-senses are tingling. There is a LOT more going on here than the article mentions. Happy, healthy 7-year olds DO NOT randomly assault adults over such a trivial cause. Neglected/abused ones, however...

SOMEONE is doing something horrible to that kid. I don’t know who. I hope the authorities find out.

Jesus. I suppose we should be “thankful” the police officer didn’t use zip-ties? /s

FTN. F*** this heightened cultural retaliation against people of color raising their voices. If a white 7 year old child had thrown a tantrum like that and was taken by the police in handcuffs, yt outrage would be off the chain.

    SEVEN GODDAMN YEARS OLD. C’MON.
