It takes some seriously hardcore racism to lock a FORTY-EIGHT-CENT comb behind glass! Society trusts white children (children, as everyone knows, being kleptomaniac little monsters) not to steal candy costing much more from impulse racks designed to invite children to grab things from them. Holy shit.

I work in retail and I can confirm 70% of the shit stolen where I work is probably done by middle and high school kids.

If this is what passes for hardcore racism in 2018, I’ll take it.

I suppose you’d rather see lynchings, but you’ll just have to be disappointed and resort to hyperbole instead

This should be a class action suit.

The neighborhood version of WalMart in my neck of the woods just did the same thing and this WalMart is in a predominantly AA neighborhood.

Hmm...I might reach out to my State’s Atty office on Monday.

You know something....we have one of those neigjborhood markets, but recent a small apt complex opened up where its predominantly lived in by blacks and mexicans that nirmally arent anywhere close to this country club neighboorhood.

Bit once it opened for residents, the walmart NM mahically began closing at 10pm instead open 24 hours.

I asked the manager what gives because i find it inconvenientshe said due a recent crime wave its a safety issue.

Im like what crime wave? Old people driving golf carts up the street, or misplaced water bottles at hot yoga?

I complained to corprate feeling it was a scared of colored people thing. Was told “we take the issue very seriously.” 3 years later its still closed at 10 pm and the gas now closes at 5

      Jim Crow never died.

When anyone says to me there’s only one color and that color is green, I want to point to situations like this. You know what else happens with them closing early, reduced working hours so wages are suppressed to those in that complex that sought jobs at that WalMart.

I use them stay on my budget but I can’t wait for their Come To Jesus day.

I’m sorry, but I’ve worked retail beauty before (NOT Walmart), and we NEVER restricted access to our ethnic haircare lines, because they sold well but were not high enough value to warrant security tags/lock up. Expensive make up lines? Sure. For ALL complexions. Expensive hair appliances? Sure. For ALL hair types. But everything else was readily available, including hair pieces, brushes, and yes, combs and picks.

And my manager would have gotten an earful if I had to get customer service to buy my kids hair products. How are you not going to let a customer read the ingredients or warnings on a product before purchase?

Or even be able to do a product comparison?!?

I hadn’t been to my local WalMart in three weeks. When I did I saw the same thing. But body soaps were included in this lockup. I had to wait for customer service to come over and she was unwilling to wait for me to make a decision as she was the only person the floor with the key.

It’s this kind of ish black folks need to get on the Gram and call for a boycott.

I doubt your retail beauty has the same amount of customers per hour as Walmart. in smaller places of course you wouldn’t need this... maybe.

Here’s one that pisses me off.

In Manhattan Beach, CA, a very affluent beach city that is very white, the CVS Pharmacy stores have “family planning” products (condoms, lubes, etc.) on open shelves.

But in Montebello, CA, the CVS store has them behind locked glass. Montebello is mostly Latino and Asian.

In downtown LA, the CVS store has them behind locked glass. Downtown LA is not lily white.

I ask store clerks about this situation. I show them the pictures of the products being freely available in very white Manhattan Beach. Mumble mumble mumble.

“Well, where’s the data?”, I ask. Do you have any data to prove that the shrinkage in your store for these products is 1) is greater than the shrinkage rate for the other types of products in the same store? and 2) is shrinkage that much greater than Manhattan Beach?

I also ask (because I’ve been ridiculing CVS staff for years now), “Hey, you’ve had these products locked up for years. How do you know what the shrinkage rate is? There should be no shrinkage. Unless you employees are stealing this stuff and selling it on the street. Is that your scam??”

    I always leave with this...in a whisper...”You know what...CVS is racist.”

    “NO”

“Oh yes...very, very racist. Because people of color can’t be trusted to enjoy sex. People of color don’t deserve pleasure. Or the security of having intercourse without having to worry about getting pregnant. THAT is CVS policy for you.”

Ugh. The amount of greys falling over themselves in an attempt to prove that this is not racist. Then saying “Well statistics say, hurf durf!” without posting any links to statistics that clearly prove their assertions that “multicultural” (as Wal-Mart signage dictates) health and beauty items are the stores most stolen. Never mind, as someone else said downthread, the most frequently stolen items are baby formula, makeup (which is not kept in the same aisle as “multicultural” hair care,) and meat. Yet the only item I have seen locked away out of these three is baby formula.

< sarcasm> But I guess we negroes just keep stealing all the Dark and Lovely, and that racism is only picking cotton during slavery. </ sarcasm>

People are chiming in here about high theft rates on these products, but the same is true for detergents and they don’t keep them behind glass. They put inventory control tags on those and unlock them at the register.

When I lived in Kentucky draino and detergent were both kept behind the counter and you could only buy so much at one time. Apparently it was a meth thing? That’s what they told me when I asked, anyway.

I live near and have been to the Walmart where this is happening at (its in Perris California), and there’s 2 sides to this. On one hand, its outright racism. Its taking the assumption that all Black people steal, Period. What makes it even more glaring is the fact that there isnt even this much security around the beauty section, where White and Latina girls get caught stealing makeup and eye lashes all the time. Why isn’t that stuff behind glass?

The other side, the nasty reality side, is that this is in Perris/Moreno Valley. Its a predominantly Black/Hispanic low income in a lot of areas here. People steal shit out here out of stores like its going out of style. Shit that will make you say and think “someone actually stole that?” will get stolen here. So while I think the shit is sad and a blatant display of racism, given the area and the people and shit I’ve seen out here, Im not surprised.

If all they have locked up is AA products, I would definitely say that’s racially motivated. I’ll also say though, that no matter where your store is, or what you’re selling, or to whom you’re selling it, people will steal. I worked for almost a decade in retail. The majority of retail theft is attributed to the people who work there, and in my experience, the rest is a mixed bag. In the store I managed in a less affluent area, I caught as many white people stealing as I did black, but that in no way compares to the percentage of theft I experienced when I moved on to a store in a VERY rich suburb, populated by VERY rich white people. The funny thing about people with money is that they sometimes start to believe they shouldn’t have to pay for stuff, so they take it because they can, and because they know no one is going to stop or prosecute them. I guess my point is that just because someone may be black/hispanic and/or low income, it doesn’t necessarily equate to a higher incidence of theft. People of all shapes, colors, and economic backgrounds take stuff, not because they have to, but because it’s there and they can.

(And I myself am a white person).

Oh yea of course. All that goes without saying. And I love what you said about how rich people feel they don that to pay for stuff, because that’s exactly how a lot of them come across. But as the resident of the area this store is in, I can understand something stupid like this having to be done because of how the crime is here. Its bad and has only gotten worse the last 5-10 years. Its sad and surprisingly since this is not an urban area at all. Its the burbs.

If hair care pomades/pastes/gels and shampoos/conditioners were fare priced I’m sure this could be easily solved. My hair doesn’t require much product, I suppose thats one upside of thinning hair, but I definitely Target(wink) the American Crew pomades and 5 finger discount what would normally cost me $25 for something I can live without. I hope they don’t put my goto products behind glass, I might actually have to pay for it one of these days...

Hey, I used to work retail and when you “gift yourself a discount” you generally get employees and management in trouble, vs giving the finger to The Man. :/

I’m not middle fingering anyone. I’ll take egregious ignorance for my stance, but definitely not grabbing pomade at Target to send a message to the man. I just don’t think the price matches the worth of the product. My only issue is that I still want it and its so easy to just put directly in a pocket while I shop for other items. I like Target. I just don’t have the same kind of moral compass you do clearly.

Is anything else in the store locked up? If not then only locking up the black/ethnic hair care products looks suspiciously racist. Especially when you consider the other items that are usually stolen like deodorant, body wash, razors, baby formula or soap powder. In my travels, I’ve never come across a Wal-Mart or other large store where only black hair care products - including cheap ass combs- were in a locked case.
