I have always found it hilarious that Marvel purposely changed BP’s name to “Black Leopard” but, for years, having The Falcon’s origin of being a gang banging pimp

But Black Panther was “too much”...smh.

Good catch on the Falcon. The context of Marvel’s writing team is a side view into US race relation right during that period of time. Publishing black characters along mainstream characters was interesting.

When he debuted he was a social worker and not a pimp before he became a superhero. Glad they eventually retconned that retcon.

Thanks for the image. White tears are popular and that picture allowed me to squeeze out loads more, making it possible to answer the growing demand. They come in different flavors.

    I can’t wait.

Let me take this opportunity to promote “revolutionary as fuck” Black Lightning on the CW.

Your browser does not support HTML5 video tag.Click here to view original GIF

(Accompanied by the 1971 song Am I Black Enough for You? by Billy Paul. Political as fuck so some pop stations refused to play it at the time because the lyrics were too “militant”. Yeah right. By the way. It was the follow up of his #1 hit Me and Mrs. Jones)

Yes his costume is a little ridiculous. I know what you’re going to say. The other DC shows (Arrowverse) on the CW suck. You’re not wrong. This show is different. I have to admit i didn’t know who he was until the show started airing. It’s pretty darn good, if i say so myself. But i’m not black so you might see it differently. So judge for yourself and watch the show tonight on the CW. The sister site of The Root, The AVclub had this to say about it:

All comic book costumes are a little ridiculous. That’s why we love them.

I love everything about this show. Everything. Including his costume. Cress Williams is a god. A 47 year old god. How he managed to not age since “Living Single” is beyond me, and my parents were the living embodiment of “Black don’t crack” so I know what that’s like for real.

By far my favorite momment from Christopher Priest’s run of Black Panther is where Black Panther KO’s Mephisto, the Marvel Universe equivalent of the Satan, in one punch.

    Excellent as usual. Especially this:

“But, the reality is that our very existence—and its continuation—is the premier middle finger to a world that has sought to crush and eradicate us on more than one occasion. And it is this undefeated spirit that bleeds into our work and livelihood (fictional or otherwise), even if we don’t want it to or expect it to.”

There’s this adage my English teacher taught me that any art, wherever and whenever it is set, is always about the time in which it is created. I paraphrase and have no idea who said it. But this speaks to me so much. For all the reasons you’ve said, we need this movie and we need it right NOW. It’s the sum of so many individual and collective successes, and way too much pain, that we’re getting to re-imagine our history and our present in this art at this moment. I’m scared of my own expectations of the film. But very ready.

    1) I only clicked on the premiere website to watch the trailer for the 100th time. Watching the red carpet ceremony would have been overwhelming last night.

...maybe I’ll watch the replay later tonight instead of “The State of the Uniom”.

    2) Dear wypipo,

Please don’t ruin this for everyone by posting videos of yourselves trying to be hip and cool and thinking you’re woke.

By virtue of being black, characters like Black Panther are destined to be “political.”

Doesn’t this apply to any outspoken, self-respecting, proud-of-their-heritage POC viewed by the US media.

That said, this article is sorely needed, just like the movie.

I’m excited about the new movies, but the white comics guys round my way are always “super” salty (see what I did there?) about women and POC representation in comics. If an existing hero is remixed ala Miles Morales as Spider-Man, they complain about “needing to make up our own heroes instead of co-opting existing (white) ones.” (Don’t even start on Ms. Marvel, smh) However, now they are angry because the Black Panther is being “forced” on them instead of getting another white person super movie when he’s just a “minor character in universe.” I swear, it’s almost like they don’t want folks to have representation at all.

Anyone who calls Black Panther a “minor character in universe” literally has no idea about Marvel Comics. He’s been around for over 50 years has had connections to almost every major sueperhero team joining up with Fantastic Four dozens of times and actually joining the Avengers. He married Storm from the X-men. The politics of Wakanda and its tech are often referenced in other comics, for crying out loud vibranium is one of the rare fictional metals from that country that was needed to make Captain America’s shield (along with adamantium which was created by the also awesome fictional country of Canada- no seriously- Marvel’s Canada is wonderfully weird)

Right on! <— throwback to the day when that statement meant it all, kids.

And as a member of the Jr Black Panthers, in the city of the Panther’s birth, Oakland, and a reader of the Black Panther comics from the early 70's on...

That’s all. Just wanted to get that all in as I wait for the movie and my twenty viewings opening weekend.
