Really cool that they’re getting a woman to run a fantasy show. In particular The Witcher, which in the wrong hands it could end up as just the worst type of male wish fulfilment fantasy.

But...Defenders wasn’t that great, and neither was season 2 of Daredevil, which is apparently the one she worked on, so I’m not sure her credentials show that much pedigree. But hey, maybe she wasn’t responsible for the bad parts of those shows.

What I’m most aprehensive about though is what I’ve always been afraid they’d do, regardless who might be in charge of it: that they’ll try to turn this show into a cheap knock-off of Game of Thrones, and shoehorn in kings and queens and this epic scale. Instead of recognizing that The Witcher is, at heart, a hardboiled detective story set in a fantasy setting.

Keep in mind that some of Geralt’s main clients are royalty. As long as it doesn’t fetishize wealth, royal intrigue is fine with me.

Indeed. A witcher’s neutrality in matters of politics is actually an important component of the series’ lore.

even though he’s extremely good at his job and is often the only one capable of saving various townsfolk and kings from whatever horrible creatures are tormenting them, everybody seems to hate him.

Except for the unrealistically attractive women who want to have hot monkey sex with him.

He’s sterile and can’t carry disease. Pre-condoms, everyone on the planet would want to have hot monkey sex with him.

Most of the said women are sorceresses, whose attractiveness is usually a product of extensive magical plastic surgery, and who rarely find men outside their profession who aren’t intimidated by them — and since finding a magic user who isn’t manipulative or obnoxious in this setting is like finding teeth from a chicken, Geralt’s straightforwardness already earns him plenty of points.

Do we know if this will be based on the story of the books or games, of if it will be a new story in the world?

Either way this could be interesting. The Witcher has a lot of interesting world building in it, but I would expect it to be hell on a budget.

I think it’s based off the books, which is fucking awesome.

I remember hearing it might be animated which would allow for alot more of the exotic locals and monsters.

I think it is supposed to be an adaptations of the books but technically the games are an extension of the book storylines with very little contradictions between the two. The third game also takes alot of steps to wrap up some of the lingering questions and mysteries that the books did not get to. For me I am more curious about which tone they will go with. The books more favor the girmdark no happy endings while the games are a bit more focused on the complexities of morality and place in some periods of esoteric happiness

Bare in mind, this is not the first time this franchise has been adapted into TV. There was a film and TV series that was made in 2001 and 2002 respectively. Granted neither are apparently very good.

The film is just a compilation of the series. And no, they’re not all that great.

Yea they are pretty atrocious though very much an adaptation of the time, i.e this is popular with nerds so lets make something that kind of adapts these elements even though it doesn’t make a whole lot of sense. I feel in this day and age it stands a much better shot given the fan expectations and studios being a little more conscious of what they are adapting now.

I just find it weird that nobody with that project is able (or willing) to clearly state if this will be animated or live-action. They’ve been deliberately vague about it ever since the first press release, and that’s been puzzling, to say the least.

    Also, Lauren Schmidt Hissric... meh.

I really hope they start from the end of “Sword of Destiny.” That was everyone understands Ciri’s story and also Gerald and Yennifer’s relationship.

Well, I hope the writer gets a big paycheck out of this one, unlike the one he scored from the Witcher games...

That was entirely his fault, he opted out of a better deal and royalties because he thought the game deal would not be as successful as it ended up being.

In fairness they offered him a percentage but he assumed it would fail and told them he wanted a lump sum instead!

Who’s going to play Geraldo Rivera?

If this was 30 years ago the game would be called “Julian Sands Simulator”

The real question is, what will be worse: this or Amazon’s Lord of the Rings adaption(s)?

Am I the only person who hates the games? Couldn’t get into them. I’m not PC (the view, not the tech) but I imagine PC people would freak out about this show given its pretty.... “interesting” themes.

I’m pretty PC (and play on a PC too) and I didn’t find the themes, or actions bothersome - to the contrary; the female characters were often drivers of story, many had stories of their own they were pursuing, the view of traditional authority (military, royalty, whatever) wasn’t jingoistic ... etc. I think the only problematic thing was the lack of POC, for the most part. The awfulness of war, the bigotry of people, etc were handled in interesting ways. LOL - a lot of my trouble came from the wholesale destruction of wildlife.
