You people had to square dance in gym class? Weird.

Also, so the big Wonkette reveal is that she found an article from the CityPaper?

“Social dance” was part of middle-school (well, junior high ‘cause I’m Canadian) PE back in my day. A little square dance, but also waltz, foxtrot, polka, cha-cha (weirdly) and jive. Also forced a bunch of self-conscious teenaged girls into contact with weird and awkward teenaged boys. But hey, we also had gymnastics on ancient unmaintained equipment with inadequate landing pads and untrained teachers.

Well, A) Yes, and it sucked, and it’s pervasive, so confirming that it is, in fact, actually total bullshit being peddled by creeps is massively satisfying.

      B) GJI inherently blows things out of proportion just by turning them into news articles, so.

    African-Americans invented square dancing

I have a feeling that instead of railing about cultural appropriation African-Americans will be more like, “That’s cool. You guys can keep it. It’s all you.”

African Americans already have their own lame dance subculture in the form of zydeco anyway.

Wait - how is square dancing not basically the exact same thing as the Scottish Ceilidh?

I know how it’s supposed to be read, but I can’t help but see “dancepiracy” as anything other than “dance piracy,” which sounds fascinating.

It does, until you see 1982's The Pirate Movie.

Square dancing is also the centerpiece of the 1950 Bugs Bunny cartoon “Hillbilly Hare” - directed by Robert McKimson - which features probably the funniest sustained sequence of music-based slapstick in the history of animation, possibly in all of film. So, in short, thanks, conspiracy.

I am glad you took the time to mention McKimson, whom I believe to be an unjustly uncelebrated Looney Tunes director. Freling and Jones get all the huzzahs, but McKimson should get some love too!

He was probably the best draftsman the studio ever had, and his early directorial efforts (with the core of Tashlin’s, then Clampett’s former animation units, and with Tedd Pierce and Warren Foster as writers, from ‘46 to the mid ‘50s) were consistently as entertaining as anything Jones or Freleng were doing. Not to mention that he nearly single-handedly directed and animated three cartoons in ‘55-’56, while reassembling his unit after a studio shutdown. I think his preference for a cornier, hammier style, and some of the blander appearance of his later cartoons tainted his legacy. Personally, he’s a favorite.

So it’s Henry Ford’s fault that I had to hold hands with girls in gym class!

I think it’s weird you wrote this article implying the square dancing-Antisemitism nexus was a big discovery by Robyn Pennacchia. Look on Google for “square dancing Antisemitism.” There are many articles, dating back years about this. Robyn would have done well to have googled the topic before going off the rails about her ‘discovery.’

chill the fuck out frog ... until Robyn published would anyone in their right fucking mind have thought to Google “square dancing” + “antisemitism” ...?

NO ... never ... why would you ever put those 2 words together?  Maybe you’ve been curating such a page for years and you finally get some press but just not the credit.  So sorry but seriously, chill it.

So would “line dancing” - so lame it can’t even get two perpendicular and one other parallel lines going.
