    This is classic.

When Barsanti addressed this earlier in the week, he said: “If Tarantino does direct, this would be one of the first times that he has ever directed something that wasn’t his original idea, with the others being a few episodes of CSI and ER.” [Actually, its two eps of CSI - a 2-parter, and just one of E.R., but let’s give him that one.]

It was quickly noted that Barsanti forgot about “Jackie Brown” and “Four Rooms”. That group of 5 derivative works (i.e. ‘not original’) could fairly be described as “a handful”.

But Barsanti attempts to correct matters with today’s update, by revising the ‘critic’s observation’ to: “…if Tarantino does end up directing, that will make this one of only a handful of projects he has ever directed that he didn’t also write.”

Of course… nope. The ONLY project he didn’t have a writing credit on is the one E.R. episode. That would make this one his potential SECOND one.

Not ‘a handful’. Get an editor, Sam.

Tarantino is a strange pick for this, but before you write him off, his movies tend to be more cerebral than JJ Abrams, and he’s succeeded in multiple genres - heist, war, western, and more. I could see him making a good Star Trek movie.

Also, he went to Paramount, not the reverse. So there’s a level of enthusiasm here that I think has been lacking for a long time with Star Trek.

I guess I am in the minority, but I just don’t think I need or want an R-rated Star Trek.

I’m with you. The Abrams-verse one is bad enough. Why go further?

The movies don’t need this kind of “improvement”.

I’m calling it now: this report is bogus. There’s no way that Paramount would greenlight an R rated Star Trek, especially after Beyond underperformed, and despite what people think about Tarantino, he understands what makes his favorite movies (and TV shows) tick. He’s not going to demand that Star Trek is R rated, just because he loves swearing and violence in his own work.

I think it’s FAR more likely that Tarantino had numerous false rumors floated out around Paramount to see who was likely to leak details to the media. It’s well known that he’s paranoid after the Hateful Eight script leaked, and this is the exact sort of thing that entertainment journalists would assume is accurate if they heard it from a “reliable” source.

if Tarantino does end up directing, that will make this one of only a handful of projects he has ever directed that he didn’t also write.

He’s only directed a handful of projects in the first place!

Edit: Further research makes me think this would be his first directorial feature he didn’t write. (Sin City doesn’t count.)

He didn’t write Jackie Brown, evidently. The comment section beat up the writers about this on Monday.

Unless I missed something somewhere, he wrote ‘Jackie Brown’, but he didn’t write ‘Rum Punch’ (the novel on which it was based).

Seems a fine line to argue adapting a 302 page novel into a I’m going to guesstimate a 157 page screenplay doesn’t count as writing. The Oscars even have a specific category to do just that.

Admittedly, this is Kinja and I’ve probably argued even more trivial technicalities...

Are we talking two “fucks” in one movie R, The Thing levels of body horror & gore R, or softcore Gorn porn R? Because the first could be fun, the second is unnecessary for Trek, and the third is at least a new idea.

Avery Brooks is basically retired. I doubt he’s coming out of retirement at 70 years old (he’s 69 now) to do a Star Trek movie.

To be fair, the Hateful 8 set a historically low bar to surmount.

I prefer Hateful 8 to his previous two films. The classical unities don’t elevate The Tempest for me, but it worked in this case.
