Should I be able to know that the second video is a trainwreck? As a non-signer, it’s hard to say whether it looks good or not.

It has subtitles and the guy does get some words right. I suspect that was less of a con and more someone trying to help that just wasn’t very good at it.

I have been studying and learning sign language for all of 4 months, so I am not anywhere close to being fluent, but I could tell the first woman had at least watched someone doing sign language for a while beforehand. She had a few moves that were almost words and some that were actual words. But the way she was throwing her hands around was definitely wrong and her non manual markers (facial movements) were definitely erratic and not adding anything to her signs. All of the finger spelling she did was gibberish too. She accidentally makes a few letters in there, but anyone who knew just the ABC’s could have known she was fake.

The second guy actually knew some words for a few things was saying. But you could tell he wasn’t fluent also. He was finger spelling a whole lot of words that actually have signs and I knew a lot of the signs he should have been making, even just having 4 months under my belt, so he must have studied it in highschool for a semester and forgot most of it or something along those lines.

As with every other strange behavior I can’t understand, I’ll just assume this is some weird sex thing for the folks who do this.

This type of shit FASCINATES me. No real money to be gained, no real motive, etc. Can someone please explain what or why the hell people do this type of stuff (beyond the cursory “mental illness” explanation)?

I seriously want to understand what is up with this stuff.

Its a long con, I bet you she also brought business cards with her for other people looking for a sign language interpreter. She shows up here, people assume she was hired, and assumes she does a good job. She shows up to the next event and does it again.

Then the trick happens, She skips an event, but then shows up to the one after that. She makes small talk and says “Oh well no one called me last time”. She gets them to agree to call her themselves because this sign language thing is boss and makes our press conferences look all professional. Now she has them contacting her, when they call she says okay, normal rate $500.

Its a con, it may work, it may not.  But people have mad a lot of money just showing up to places in a suit and acting like they work there.

When reached for comment, the Tampa Police Sign Language Division head said “It sounded okay to me.”

The second video is a bit of fake news. The guy clearly knows sign language he is just not very good at doing it for a large crowd or fast enough to translate. He is probably a volunteer and all they had.

If you subtitle someones sign language its never going to look like what someone is saying. It uses a ton of shot-hand(no pun intended) to convey messages quickly without sound. You have to use a lot of context to know what someone is saying in sign language.

The other lady may have been planting seeds for a con
