Of course they want Waititi! Who could pass up the opportunity to fire such a fantastic director a couple months into filming?

Did you not realize it was going to be a comedy when they got a comedy director and had a funny trailer?

I know they never will, because of the big-money obligations that go with such a popular franchise, but from a creative standpoint, Star Wars could do no better than to set up a dozen films budgeted at $20 million each, give them to directors with a handful of guidelines, and let them do whatever they want. It’s a hell of a sandbox and I’d love to see what someone like Waititi could do with it without Kennedy breathing down his neck.

20 million for a Star Wars movie? Will the whole thing take place in a space cantina?

I am just fine with him never doing a Star Wars movie. His tone of making fun of every development in Thor Ragnarok took me out of the movie. I don’t really need that in a Star Wars experience.

Yeah, I enjoyed Ragnarok but it worked for Thor mostly because Thor needed saving from oblivion. The humor wasn’t so much a good fit, although the actors certainly did well with it, so much as a lifeline for that franchise, which had been spinning its wheels and needed a breath of life.

Star Wars isn’t in the same state and would do better, right now at least, to stick to its established tone.

That’s not to say that Waititi couldn’t work wonders with the right bit of Star Wars, but unless Kennedy would actually be willing to let him explore an eccentric corner of the galaxy that suits his sort of humor, I’m not sure that his sensibility is really ‘right’ for Star Wars.

Yeah. Given absolute control over the Thor: Ragnarok script? Waititi STILL used mostly improv.

Just pick a planet Waititi can do ridiculous things on and don’t try to tie it to anything.

Taika Waititi confirmed for Tag and Bink: The Motion Picture. Or is the Dark Horse stuff just completely out of bounds now?

They could even use Jaxom the green space rabbit that was in the Marvel Star Wars comics! Disney owns both!

Well, they’ll eventually have to branch out and deliver various genres within the SW universe if they want to continue releasing one movie/year. If they do it well like the MCU and deliver cutting edge political “Winter Soldier” Thrillers next to good “Ragnarök” comedy, I’m in.
