This review astonishingly neglects the perhaps most significant moment in the Harding story: the time she bought coffee from the coffee stand where I was working in NW Portland in the mid-90s, and after she left I turned to the other people there and said, and I quote, “Hey, I think that was Tonya Harding.”

Can’t make this stuff up, man. Can’t make this stuff up.

This isn’t about the movie itself, but I did want to say that I’ve grown a little uncomfortable with how the newfound interest in Harding (there was a 30 for 30 a few years back) has reduced Nancy Kerrigan to, at best, the epitome of what Harding was struggling against and, at worst, an outright antagonist.

It’s somehow become easy to forget that Kerrigan was the innocent victim of an absolutely brutal crime. The tendency to portray her as “the Disney Princess” and golden child set against Harding’s poor, put-upon striver has the rather perverse effect of making Kerrigan an unsympathetic figure, which is really unfair.

I agree. A person can be a victim and a victimizer, and Harding was both. All Kerrigan was guilty of was being dedicated to her craft and talented.

I don’t know, I think that it’s easy to remember that Kerrigan was the victim of a brutal crime. It’s her horribly pained sound byte that’s the most striking artifact of this whole episode.

She’s probably as responsible as anyone for the conversation being about Tonya since she (Kerrigan) doesn’t seem interested in commenting anymore, and good for her.

From what i’ve seen, certainly the 30 for 30, Tonya is painted as a victim of a lot of things, many of them off the ice and Kerrigan more an example of someone without Harding’s burdens than as Harding’s antagonist.

Midori Ito was the first woman to land a triple axel in competition. Harding was the first American woman to do it. That said, go to YouTube and watch the footage of her doing it. It’s truly breathtaking, and even knowing all the shit that came later, I feel happy for her in that moment whenever I see it.

I’m Team Tonya forever, but when Kerrigan wore the same outfit she was attacked in to her Olympic skate practice—which had to be shared with Harding as members of the same team—that was a baller move.

(Yeah, I know way too much about this stuff.)

Was going to mentioned that she was not the first lady to land the triple axel. I have been a fan of skating since this incident. Skating became very popular for a couple of years afterwards. Sucks that the only time they show it now is during the Olympics. Thank God for the internet.

Ito was an amazing skater with a great balance of elegance and athleticism, but she didn’t have a crazy scandal so I guess she’s not as well remembered.

I lost interest in figure skating after the 2002 Olympic pairs voting scandal, but still remember a lot of the ‘90s stuff. (Fun fact: Kristi Yamaguchi and I were from the same town--she’s about 3 years older than me--and we had the same orthodontist.)

I’m looking forward to this movie. I for one had no idea who Tonya Harding was (born in the mid-90’s and did not grow up in the States), but the trailer looks so good.

Also Sebastian Stan was really good as the winter soldier in Civil war. He is a pretty good actor.

The media really was pretty terrible to her, and the skating world apparently even worse. I can’t imagine how frustrating it must be to consistently destroy the competition only to have judges score you lower. Meanwhile her primary rival Nancy Kerrigan was the all-American girl everyone loved. Granted she turned out to be dumb as a bag of hammers and not very nice, but that’s TV for you.

Interesting. This actually makes me want to watch it more... seeing as it is from her perspective (one of perspectives atleast).

I wonder if Tonya Harding hadn’t been implicated in the attack on Nancy Kerrigan if she could’ve become a popular figure later on thanks to the internet. She has a unique persona.

I’ve never been more sold by a movie trailer than when this one dropped the “Goodfellas of figure skating” blurb. I would have stopped everything I was doing to go see this movie right then, right there.

I dunno, I think the contrast between the Captain Americas and Hot Tub Time Machine informs me that Sebastian Stan can, indeed, act.

What’s amazing to me is Sebastian Stan now has two movies about figuring skating on his resume within the past two years.

I was in grad school when the knee capping went down. Had a friend who had just come over from China and was trying to figure out American culture and he was fascinated/confused as hell by this hole thing. His take on the incident will always stay with me: “in America she (Harding) can still skate, in China she would never skate again.”

Actually, no. My friend was connected himself (that’s how he was able to go to school in the US) and his take was that her behavior would have embarrassed said big wigs so much that they would have turned their backs on her.  Chinese big wigs actually care about their reputation.

After I saw this trailer originally, I got sucked into a total binge of Tonya’s skating performances on Youtube (with a little Kristi, Nancy and Oksanna thrown in). As someone who was young when the scandal went down and only ever heard about the broken laces type episodes, I was shocked at how good Tonya was. Obviously the sport has evolved, but she and those ladies have way better programs then what I see today in the women’s. I highly recommend watching those performances, especially since the Winter Olympics are around the corner! Virtue and Moir for Gold!!!
