The narrative beats in this episode were hilariously insane. I’m still struggling which of the following was my favorite:

Nico: My proto-romance Alex has been kidnapped as we were investing our serial killer parents and I have no idea where he is.

Karo: THE CHURCH MY PARENTS GUIDE IS RESPONSIBLE FOR ALL THIS HORROR. Also, FYI, I just realized I might be into you.

    Or

Jeffrey: They’ve kidnapped the most precious thing in the world to me, my darling son Alex. This cannot stand.

Two minutes later: Jeffrey is shooting automatic fire at a guy standing right next to his son without seeming regard to his son’s safety.

    Or

Alex: They are going to kill that kid, we have to go save him or he’ll end up like Destiny who haunts our every action.

Others: True, but also. YAY WE HAVE SUPERPOWERS. PARTY AND LAUGHTER TIME.

The shooting while his son was standing RIGHT THERE was insane to me. I honestly thought it was a rival gang that happened upon them until the dad popped out of the bushes. How dumb are you??

I shut this shit off as soon as they all had their power stance moment. This is not a show for thinking adults

Without spoiling anything, something like 90% of the Runaways storyline after the Gibborim arc is people walking in on other people kissing. The quality drop is precipitous.

so... should we be happy they’re looking for ways to stretch the one good arc out?

Episode 5 was jarringly horrible in so many fundamental respects...it was like watching a totally different show, an old-fashioned crap show. And from what you describe comes next I am in all likelihood bailing on this show.

This is a very internet way to begin a comment, but am I the only one who thought that Jonah and Victor were the same person until reading this review? I mistook Marsters and McMahon for the same actor with differing old/young makeup and that it was Victor visiting Geoffey in prison at the start. (EDIT: No, I couldn’t explain the ending, but that in itself wasn’t so unusual here as to preclude anything.)

But really, enough with the flashbacks already. I’m so very tired of flashbacks.

To be honest, I don’t think many people confused them but I admit that now they have a passing resemblance. I think that most people old enough to remember Buffy’s Spike would never confuse him with Charmed’s Cole (a.k.a. Doom in the Fantastic Four movie_ not the last one).

No, but only because Julian McMahon was Cole in Charmed and I was obsessed with that show as a kid :) As soon as he popped up I said ‘Cole!’ and knew he was the weird crusty body.

I am still very much enjoying this show but I also have a problem with the show called Runaways having zero runaways. I thought maybe this would be the ep that at least Alex and Nico leave, but I guess not.

Also, they need to cut out some of these parents or at least cut down on their screen time. I do not care about Karolina’s dad, the affair between Nico’s dad and Chase’s mom, or really Alex’s mom at all. I do like the actors that play Gert’s parents, so even though they’re boring, I don’t mind having them around

They probably pay the adults more than the kids, so I don’t expect them to go away any time soon. And if the kids do finally run away, I’m sure that half the time will be spent with the patents looking for then. I hope legion comes back soon

The titular runaways are the sacrificed children. This is literally a line from the show.

Am I the only one bummed about Chase and Victor bonding over engineering?

I hate that they all just seem to know what to do with their powers. Grrr.

The only one I felt this way about was Karolina. She goes from glowing two times to suddenly knowing she can shoot beams from her hands. Everyone else had chances to use their powers before this, with the exception of chase who just did what he designed the fistigons to do.

She was the real complaint I had... And that Chase and his dad basically built those things from scratch and drove there in an hour

Does every review need to be made up whining that the show isn’t exactly the same as the comic? We get it by now. Just review it for what it is.

The comics say it’s a Velociraptor but the comics are wrong. She’s a Deinonychus from the early Cretaceous Period. Hi, Old Lace.

Chase: Maybe there is an explanation. They must be doing this for a reason right. What if it’s a good one.

    Molly:Good reason to kill kids.

Molly is the youngest and the smartest. There are no shades of grey here. They’re doing it for a reason alright. But i’m afraid it isn’t a good one. In the comics this ethics discussion was also a thing. I don’t get it. Because whatever the reason killing innocent people is always bad. I know feelings about parents can be complicated. But this is just misplaced loyalty towards murderous assholes.

It’s time to run away or as someone puts it in the comics “
fall off the face of the earth.”  But if i have to guess they won’t Runaway before the first season has ended. (sigh)

The flashback in the beginning was pretty boring. The shows needs to focus more on the kids and not the parents. O, well...

I get why you’d want to make some changes to Alex from the comics, but it seems weird that like everyone else has powers and he’s just like a sort of normal kid who is like ok at hacking I guess? Like he’s not really the leader in this (SINCE NO ONE IS DOING ANYTHING), so he seems weirdly out of place.

My impression was pretty much the opposite to this review. I liked the interlocking plots (aside from that dull “Ultra” subplot) and tension between the parents; and I thought the action scene at the end was terrible.

It felt cheap and stilted - characters took turns to move, and everyone just waited whenever someone had a line or entered the scene. Combined with the terrible back-and-forth camera changes, it felt almost like the kids and the gangsters were filmed separately and edited together.

At least Molly’s finally managed to reveal her powers. The contrived “shut up Molly” bit every time she tried to mention them was annoying as fuck.
