I recently picked up the comics again after stalling midway through the second trade and clicked on this out of morbid curiosity, can anyone explain to me how the show alters Lucifer’s depiction to make hunting down a single criminal a season spanning task? I’m not trying to be snarky, it’s just a huge difference in levels of power to go from the Lucifer in the comic who fends off armies with a flick of the wrist and seems to perceive human beings as one would an insect to a guy who has difficulty solving mysteries. It really just makes me feel like they should have made their own “Devil but he solves crimes” show instead of “adapting” the series, which I’m aware by saying is an act of beating a dead horse. My uncle likes the show and I never have anything to talk to him about, so I guess you guys could hopefully satisfy my curiosity without me having to look up every minuscule difference on the internet and could maybe slip it into conversation at the next family get together

They’ve taken some characters and elements from the comics and have otherwise been doing their own thing separate from the comics. They been slowly inching towards more and more comics related stuff but it’s been a slow road.

I’m pretty sure unless Starz or something like that has an interest in it I don’t think we’re ever going to get a straight adaption of the comics.

The series focuses less on the all-encompassing power of Lucifer and instead on the more “human” aspects of him. Though as I write regularly, the show is very aware he’s not human — that gets him into a lot of predicaments. It takes the concept of Lucifer as a fallen angel and his relationship with his family (God, his angelic siblings, eventually his mother) and looks to see if such contentious relationships can even be fixed. And if they even should be. (He doesn’t show up, but all we know about God here is that he’s kind of a dick. Kind of like on Supernatural, actually.) It’s very much a story about redemption: If the Devil can be redeemed, then doesn’t that mean there’s hope for the rest of us? (I’d compare its redemption focus to Angel, though Lucifer is nowhere near as introspective as Angel. But that’s because he refuses to be. Maybe like if Spike was the lead.) Like the comic, the series hits a lot of points about how who Lucifer actually is and what everyone assumes about him (as the Devil) aren’t exactly the same thing.

As for the Devil Cop of it all, Lucifer’s motivations for that are made clear from the start: He doesn’t so much care about being a do-gooder as much as he wants to punish the wicked. That was his job in Hell, after all, and to basically get to do so “legally” is a thrill for him. Though, quite often, these cases circle back to him. He’s a very busy devil.

Oh, and the show has a lot of ridiculously inappropriate jokes it somehow gets on the air. That’s fun.

Return of the Maze. See what you did there. Thanks for putting that song in my head yet again.

Your browser does not support HTML5 video tag.Click here to view original GIF

Maze is a sexual harassment case waiting to happen. Nah, this is a typical Maze greeting. Demons have no boundaries. Some things never change.

Maze to Linda “And you know me, I was all over that angel. I went in deep. Used every tool in that Swiss Army knife. Know what I mean? I touched nerves that he never knew he had.”

That’s too much information. Who are you? MacGyver?

Why ask for a personal day if you can just ask for a vacation day? Asking for a personal day will immediately spark people’s curiosity. The anniversary of your death father is not a personal day. According to HR (assholes) here this counts as a vacation day. They only give you a personal day once for that. It’s a pretty standard policy. It won’t be a problem if you plan it a few weeks/months ahead.

Sadly though from Linda’s reaction, I think she and Amenadiel already knocked boots. Might have been really awkward afterwards though. That or Linda was lying her ass off & Amen was hiding under the desk during that whole conversation (was so hoping for a pan from behind Linda’s chair showing that).

As for the “Sinnerman”, I get a real feeling Pierce is far deeper into this than just “he killed my brother”, as in that’s true but Pierce is the one that killed him because he is really the “Sinnerman”. Split personality, possession, etc and the guy in custody is just his flunky. Why? For such an arch-villain, he sure had a shitty plan & gave up too easily. And his telling Pierce, “Do what you gotta do” sounds more like what a loyal underling tells their boss not someone who’s life you’ve basically ruined. What could be better than taking over where Luci hangs out, getting the one human he truly cares about interested in him (make out scene coming up?), let Lucifer in on “the truth”, do everything else leading up to this and then surprise...it was someone in front of you the whole damn time. Guess we’ll find out next week.

Vacation days often require different and advanced approval than personal days in larger organizations. Also, typically one HAS to use personal days in a given year, but can accrue vacation. Vacation is also considered more “at supervisor discretion” versus personal is often fixed things that apply to a certain number of people but not everyone at the same time (family events, religious holidays).

Considering what happened with the Sinnerman in the past I’ve been wondering if the Sinnerman can possess people and this guy is just an unfortunate patsy that’ll get dumped the moment the Sinnerman doesn’t need him anymore. I guess we’ll see.

Possession is a really intriguing idea!

If that’s the case, this guy has been possessed ever since the Sinnerman was in Chicago, going by the DNA match Ella brought up.

LaToya’s review is dead-on concerning the Sinnerman— in itself it’s a really fun performance, but it falls short of the expectations built up around the character as string-pulling supervillain. Almost as if the Sinnerman has simply been a front man for another mastermind entirely.

The episode played with my expectations in other ways as well—Lucifer and Maze’s discussion of what she really wanted led me to think that Maze was going to confess her own romantic love for Linda (which may be a sign that I’m watching too shows on the CW). But Maze’s real motivation was much better and truer to who Maze is.

I really enjoyed this episode. There’s been some awkwardness and bad characterization in some of the writing this season that made me worried that Lucifer had lost its keen edge from the previous year. And the amazing quality of the hold-over episodes made those flaws in the writing seem even bigger. But the last couple episodes have been reassuring, and the arcs for Amendiel, Linda and Charlotte have been phenomenal thus far. I can’t believe we’re already at the midseason finale next week!

I’m hoping that now that we’re almost done with the season 2 holdovers (Still one left to go) that things should be a bit more straightforward now.

She did engage in a little grab-ass with Linda when she first came by the office - which Linda either didn’t notice or didn’t mind. I wouldn’t totally rule out the possibility that there’s some attraction there.

Kevin Carroll’s able to cut lose a lot more here (compared to The Leftovers, where the character called for him to be more restrained), and he just rocked it. Great casting choice

Genuinely surprised by that closing scene. Thought he would’ve swapped clothes with that cop and escaped, but didn’t expect this.

I loved how they set us up for that expectation with the African-American cop—such a narrative-savvy detail!

“Do angels’ powers shape their personalities, or are your personalities shaped by your powers?” Oh for fuck’s sake, Lucifer writers, that’s the same thing! You just changed the same sentence into the passive voice. I can’t believe nobody realized the line was scripted wrong!

About Charlotte: is driving me mad that nobody has mentioned to her she’s supposed to be Lucifer’s stepmother. And that’s of course a contrivance, because the moment she heard that, she would immediately reveal it as false, since that’s of course something from before her “missing time”.

Also, is Lucifer implying the US justice system is inherently evil? Like, if you work as a defense lawyer, you will never find redemption at all? Because otherwise, wouldn’t a better way for Charlotte to redeem herself be working for an organization that provides free legal aid to people who can’t afford it?

So wildly successful defense attorney (with a history of protecting mobsters) switching sides and working for the D.A.’s office...is that a thing that happens? Because itseems like there would be a conflict of interest or non-compete clause in the way of that happening. Or those lawyers would probably get killed

The Sinnerman has been granting favors just like Lucifer, has tried to keep Lucifer locked up from the rest of the world, and may be responsible for Luci getting his wings back. I’ll venture a guess and say his greatest desire is to replace him as the Devil.

“I’m actually starting to get onboard the “Pierce is shifty” train of thought with this episode. “

Pierce has seemed shifty from his first appearance. He was so shifty, I have assumed he is the Sinnerman (I have’t seen this last night’s episode, so I have no idea whether I am right or wrong, just that there’s no way this guy they captured in this episode is the Sinnerman unless the possession theory holds out).
