Everything else aside, why on earth would that executive say anything besides “Legal says I’m not allowed to comment on that”?

He probably thought it was off the record banter with a soccer mom.

“Just between you and me the accusers sound nuts.” (makes cuckoo sign) (steps in a big pile of metaphorical shit)

...asked why Netflix wasn’t taking the allegations from Masterson’s accusers seriously... he responded, “we don’t believe them.”

I can break this down for you:

“We aren’t firing Danny Masterson because we can get away with not believing his accusers, because Danny himself has thoroughly refuted these allegations, whereas Louis CK came forward saying the allegations against him were true, and Kevin Spacey didn’t deny anything and we also have many people working on House of Cards who filed complaints about his behavior. Beyond that, while we believe the demographics of the viewership of Louis CK’s standup and House of Cards would no longer want to watch programming featuring these performers, we don’t think the sort of people who like The Ranch give a shit about these things.”

This prompted her to say “I’m one of them” before leaving, and though he later tried to explain that he didn’t know who she was initially, the accuser supposedly talked to her about the accusations later in a “condescending tone.”

I’ve been re-reading the ending of this trying to figure out who is who. Is the last “her” just a typo I’ve been spending too much time trying to sort out?

It’s the AV Club so yes, of course it’s a typo.

When asked to comment, Netflix responded “holy shit The Ranch is still on? Is anybody watching it?”

That “are you still watching?” message that pops up when you’ve been streaming for hours pops up as soon as you hit play on The Ranch.

I’m always so paranoid if I leave the house for the house and can’t remember if I left ‘The Ranch’ on. It bothers me ALL DAY.

Does The Ranch make that much money for Netflix? I’d literally never heard of it until it started being mentioned in relation to these “Hyde from That ‘70s Show is allegedly a rapist” stories. I can’t imagine it was a bigger hit for the service than House of Cards, and we all saw how fast they left a Kevin Spacey-sized hole in that door when the stories about him surfaced. Additionally, does the Church of Scientology still wield that much power? I thought all the information that’s come out lately, starting with Going Clear, has revealed them to be kind of a paper tiger, with membership way down since their 1980s heyday.

“and we all saw how fast they left a Kevin Spacey-sized hole in that door when the stories about him surfaced”

Spacey basically admitted to the allegations against him, whereas apparently Masterson has explicitly denied them all. If your star cops to allegations, you can’t keep him around any more (“Wait, he admitted to these horrific acts but you kept him around anyway?!”), but if he says they’re all lies and holds firm, it’s easier to justify not firing him.

Spacey publicly apologized to Rapp. He says he doesn’t remember the event, which is neither admitting or denying, but the apology is key there.

Louis C.K. straight up admitted the allegations were true.

Masterson denies them, and according to the laws of this country, everyone is innocent until proven guilty.*

    This part I particularly enjoyed.

The statement also puts some blame on the accuser, suggesting that she should have identified herself before speaking with Yeatman...

“Damn it! You should have given us a chance to hide how we truly feel!”

Well yea I mean AV Club clearly thinks the fact this was said to her face makes it worse. I think that’s pretty stupid logic- Bill Clinton calling his victims lying sluts via human gargoyle Carville was just as offensive as if he had said it to their face same logic here- but if that’s the tact you are going to roll with then yes she should have identified herself so that the guy could have known who he was talking to.

Taking away Scientology’s tax exemptions wouldn’t screw over enough poor people or minorities so I doubt he’ll follow through.

Yeah. I think “accuser” should be “executive” in that sentence.

I think the point trying to be made was the executive was condescending to her even after he found out she was an accuser.
