Politics Corner - This Year in Jerusalem edition. Trump decided that what America (and the world) needed is a new international crisis, so he decided to create one. I have never believed for a moment in the ‘Trump is playing super-chess’ theory. Because he is Trump. But I DO believe in the ‘Trump shits on the board to distract attention’ theory. Because he is Trump.
This is a strategy that is hard to implement if you care about other people, but super-easy, and effective, if you don’t. So, as the Tax Scam moves forward and Roy Moore creeps closer to election, Trump shits the board.
Trump intends to recognize Jerusalem as the Capital of Israel - something America has declined to do for 70 years, and that no one else in the world does, because it is lighting a match and tossing it into a powder keg. Literally every other country in the world recognizes Tel Aviv as the capital, regardless of their stance on Israel/Palestine, because moving your Israeli embassy to Jerusalem is a blow against the peace process.
So, let’s get some background here. Bible, diaspora, pograms, British mandate Palestine, the White Paper, Holocaust, Dayr Yassin massacre, Truman recognition, refugee crisis, Six Days War, right of return, Black September, Camp David, Intafadeh, Apartheid State, Second Intafadeh, Hamas, Wall, stabbings and oppression. I left out some recent wars, but everyone who read that is now basically an expert on Israel Palestine. Congrats.
Recognizing Jerusalem as Israel’s capital contradicts international law, isolates us from our allies, and reignites conflict in a region that wasn’t exactly begging for a new conflict. It is opposed by left-wing nutters like SecDef Mattis, SecState Tillerson, NSA McMaster, and everyone else with a pulse, a brain, and basic knowledge of the region. It is supported by much of the Israeli right and American evangelicals who believe Israel must reclaim Jerusalem to trigger End Times so Jesus will come back because of Revelations.
It is unpopular with the rest of the world. But Trump is playing to his base. This is the kind of thing that happens when you elect someone who cares more about getting his base to cheer extra-loud than he cares about the future of the world

As a child, I was heart broken when the 2nd part of the ALF finale never aired. I waited for weeks for it air. But it never came back.
I would not be nearly upset if the second half of this South Park season wasn’t aired.

  They are up against a news cycle that is more bizarre than the things they created previously, so Stone and Parker are stumbling badly. Maybe they deserve it because Team America World Police seemed to help Bush II retain that ancient mansion with the 20500 zip code. Maybe it’s because they made a stage musical making the Mormons look cool. Either way, it just wasn’t their year.

Might want to edit that headline. These days, “X Shuts Down for the Season” usually means, “Someone on the staff got caught doing highly inappropriate and possibly illegal things, so the network is halting production while they do damage control.”
