I think it has more to do with their unwillingness to accept that privilege is a thing. They want to believe that everyone starts from the same place and the reason why white people succeed is because of hard work while all the brown people are lazy.
They don’t want to hear that the single biggest determining factor in how successful you’ll be is how much money your parents had when you were born. They want to blame single parent homes, but refuse to acknowledge that the justice system that targets and punishes black men at far higher rates than white men is a large part of the reason why there are so many single parent homes. They want to blame the students for failing at school, but not the school systems that are funded by property taxes based on the accumulated wealth of generations of privilege. They want to believe that if you simply do what the officer says, you’ll be fine, despite having actual video proof that that’s simply not the case.
So when a person of color points out some of these privileges that white people enjoy, they feel like they’re being attacked. “Nuh uh! I worked hard and earned everything I got. Starting with a small $2 million dollar loan from my dad, I built my business from scratch!”

1.) Michael got me laughing in front of customers like a crazy person.
2.) Part of the fallacy in these things is that no one says it’s not OK to be white. No one is asking white people to stop being white. People of color are giving legitimate critiques of white people, critiques with validity and centuries of experiences to back them up. We’re not asking them to stop being white; were asking them to *be better white people*.
That’s what they can’t deal with, because without knowing it, they feel being white is the best thing you can be. And so attacks on white supremacy and white privilege become attacks on whiteness, and white people take those criticisms so personal that for most it’s impossible to see what we are saying is true.
I know a lot of obstensibly liberal white people who will claim up and down that racism was only a fraction of why Donald Trump was elected. I know a lot of white liberals who spend all day on Twitter attacking black liberals for indulging in “divisive identity politics”. They too feel attacked. An attack on white supremacy is still an attack on them, and they can’t see that asking to be acknowledged as truly equal is not the same as asking you to stop being what you are.
It IS okay to be white. Its not okay to be a racist. It’snot okay to be complicit to white supremacy. No one is saying that whiteness is a problem. They’re attacking the idea that white people are better just by being who they are.

One poster (srry, I forget who) was saying they thought this “movement” started as a 4Chan troll, and was designed so that dolks would question or argue with the premise, thus making wypipo in earshot hella butthurt.
It sounds plausible. I think that if you see someone sporting these signs you should just try to reassure them. “Don’t worry Bradley, you’ll still be hired and promoted faster than women and negros more talented than you!”

  There’s a perverse beauty in this phrase. It’s like a well-designed trap. The beauty lies in how innocent it sounds. Absent of any context, it’s a harmless phrase. Challenge somebody on it, and the immediate response will be, “why isn’t it okay to be white?”
  If you don’t have a solid counter argument, they’ll stop you cold and accuse you of being a racist because you don’t think it’s okay to be white. In such a case, it’s better to draw those feelings of being under siege out into the open so it’s easier to challenge. Being white isn’t the problem; it’s the privilege associated with being white that’s the problem.

It really is galling to see something like this gaining traction. The fact they dont realize with this bullshit is this: no one ever said that it wasnt ok to be white, the same way no one said Black Lives Matter more than anyone else. We just want White people to own up to their bullshit that have made anyone that’s Black and other people of color 2nd,3rd,4th etc class citizens. How they see people trying to get them to understand the problems this country has had in regards to race relations and accountability as an attack on them I will never understand.

Since most of the activity thus far has been in and around college campuses, it might also just be another method the Alt-Reich is using to identify and recruit young disgruntled white kids who’ve convinced themselves that they’re “oppressed” because people just don’t “get” that they’re being “ironic” when they post video of themselves on Instagram, at the Halloween party, in blackface, dressed in Confederate flag themed regalia, spouting casually racist stuff to be “funny”.
