This is sad and horrible, but Jamaica is a very dangerous place these days. A lot of the violence has moved from Kingston to Montego Bay. The violence is frequent and senseless. We’re talking tourist killed for 50 American Dollars. The safer parts of the island are on the other side of the island and in some of the rural parts. So if you’re making a documentary, you have to be so careful.

This is just too sad, as beautiful as Jamaica can be, it’s also a very dangerous place sadly.

Not trying to be insensitive here, but Am i missing something, or is it a writing error, her family actually owns a resort on the island?

I thought that was odd too, in connection to the gofundme.

About to clarify, (now that I’ve clarified for myself) but her grandmother apparently owns an inn on the island.

Damn, RIP Desiree. I can only hope that her family receives justice.

My mom always told me that the reason why we didn’t go live in Jamaica when I was little was that the country had gotten increasingly dangerous after the 80s. It’s sad that she doesn’t even feel safe visiting her home country anymore.

It is really sad. It is so many islands in the West Indies too. My family is from Trinidad and I love going home but it can be dangerous. I never go anywhere by myself at night, I never wear all my jewelry and I always am home before dark when I go out by myself. The amount of drugs that move through the islands make it terribly dangerous for everyone. I have a friend who is a police officer back home, they had to shut down a beach a few years ago because a yacht capsized offshore and the beach was covered in cocaine.

Why she’s light-skinned enough that the mainstream media might pay attention!

If the media weren’t so focused on guilty pleas and the tax scam bill, they would take one look at that picture and make Desiree Gibbon the new Natalee Holloway.

I’m ... really not appreciating the algorithm today. The first three lead stories say some variation of “woman of color killed”.

If you wouldn’t do it /go with a person here don’t do it there- Rules for vacationing. People are still people, even with an accent.

Maybe she documented something someone didn’t want seen, like drugs, or a liaison.
