I may be in the minority, but I think it’s outrageous he’s not in confinement. He stabbed and killed someone in school. Because he was bullied? I got bullied. Lots of kids get bullied. It’s horrible and I am glad it’s a focus now, but it’s ridiculous to me that you can get sympathy and MONEY after committing murder because kids were teasing you, however mercilessly.

Further, the report says he was the subject of “racist bullying” but the kid he killed was Black and reportedly not one of his tormentors. Maybe he snapped, but that doesn’t mean he ought to get a pass. He’s a minor, so I am not advocating that we throw away the key or assume he can’t be reformed, but why on earth should he get to spend the holidays with his family while the other child rots in the ground and that child’s mom has to spend the holiday with a black hole where her son used to be?

Not for this at all. Just makes me sad all the way around.

I have no idea his age when the crime happened, but he’s 18 now so not a minor. I’m also not saying he should be locked up for good or anything, but he should be treated as any other adult who stabbed someone to death. With premeditation (he bought the knife 2 weeks ago), he should be looking at a long time either in a jail or mental health facility.

“I got bullied. Lots of kids get bullied.”

Wearing it like a badge of honor didn’t make it right. No you didn’t retaliate like this but what if you did? I doubt you would want the response from the legal / justice community to be I got bullied. Lots of kids get bullied.

How reading this whole story makes me feel ...

Lots of kids who get bullied don’t stab people, but I also don’t think this kid would have stabbed people if someone had done something about his bullying.

“Lots of kids who get bullied don’t stab people”

Where have you been hiding? The weapon of choice is different but there are far too many stories about kids snapping and hurting themselves or others. There appears to be this overarching theme of kids telling school administrations and nothing happening.

I know it’s a work of fiction but this reminds me of Moonlight, the administration knew that boy was being bullied but he went to jail when he finally snapped.

You seriously think that this is the way that a meaningful portion of bullied kids deal with their bullies?

Talk about living under a rock ... “Lots” doesn’t mean “all” there, dude, but it does mean the vast, vast majority of people.

Most people who are bullied suffer in silence until some means of escape other than snapping and murdering their bullies arrives.

Some of those are healthy (growing up, moving, getting help from a parent or a teacher, finding a group of friends to provide support and shelter) and some unhealthy (groveling subservience to bring it to an end, suicide, truancy), but if stabbing your bullies to death represented a meaningful share of the population, then however violent you think our high schools are now would pale in comparison to the veritable grindhouse horror flick they would be because millions upon millions of kids are bullied every day.

      Yeah, agreed.

Like, I think anyone who has been bullied has had those moments where they lash out. I once chucked a medicine ball at a bully’s head, and grabbed another’s throat/adam’s apple hard enough to require two folks to break my grip. Gonna happen if you push someone too far.

That said...the kid fucking killed another kid. And I can’t really disagree with the mom’s anger at the end.

I’m sort of confused about some of the details in the case and can’t figure out how/when they changed. Maybe it’s just a matter of the school covering their asses, but when this was originally reported wasn’t the story that these three students had a week-long argument going on and that Cedeno stabbed them in self-defense because they were literally hitting him.

Now the story is that he was bullied, but not previously by these two students and that they weren’t hitting him, but had thrown pencils at him?

Those are two very different stories...have I missed where the changes in the case have come from? Maybe it’s just a matter of perspective and who is telling the story, but those seem like some pretty big gaps to fill. Especially what actually led to the stabbing.

According to a witness it sounds like the killer pulled a knife on a kid and then stabbed him to death when the kid threw a punch and thought he’d get away with it. That is not self defense and it’s pretty ridiculous that the kid is even out.

Perhaps I’d be a terrible judge, because a big part of me feels really sorry for this kid and would like him to get 10 years probation and no jail time.

The affluenza teen got that very sentence and he killed 4 people while driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs.

The age difference stands out to me. The 18 year old is legally an adult. And his victim was a 15 year old. I wanted to kill my bullies too. But had a enough sense to know I’d be throwing my life away on them. This kid seems to think the blood on his hands is righteous.

The Columbine shooters were bullied and did something about it (something horrific). How is this any different?

I am gay, and I did not, and will not ever give money to criminals.

Just because he was bullied does not justify his actions. All he learned is that killing someone is an acceptable behavior in life.

I feel sorry for him, however he did assault two people with a deadly weapon and killed one .... so he should do some time.
