From that NYT article, which has been really bothering this morning:

The woman said Mr. Lauer asked her to unbutton her blouse, which she did. She said the anchor then stepped out from behind his desk, pulled down her pants, bent her over a chair and had intercourse with her. At some point, she said, she passed out with her pants pulled halfway down. She woke up on the floor of his office, and Mr. Lauer had his assistant take her to a nurse.

    That is rape.

Don’t even bother convincing me otherwise, legal definition my ass. I’m not going to spend one second thinking what happened to that woman was anything but rape.

Of course it is rape. And her reaction - passing out from shock - is common in rape.

Sincere question. So ya, this dude’s apology seems fairly disingenuous. He’s a bag of shit who abused his power and other people’s rights. We all understand that.

My question is what can he do, or can he ever earn, forgiveness in your mind? I’m not saying he deserves it. I’m not even saying it’s possible. I’m just curious what he would need to say or do to truly make people say “you know, he did some absolutely monstrous things, and he’ll always have to own up to them, but he’s making a serious effort at being a better person, perhaps he deserves a chance to become better.”

I’m all for raking assholes like this over the coals, as has been happening a lot lately, but I do wonder if they are completely lost causes in the public’s eye or if they will ever have a chance for redemption.

I cant speak for others, but for me:

Turn yourself in, plea guilty, and do your time. That would earn you... something, in my eyes. Maybe not forgiveness, maybe not trust, but I might not completely object to your continued existence.

Some of what is being said about me is untrue or mischaracterized, but...

Why do they ALWAYS include this line in their “apologies”? All these butisms show they really aren’t as sorry as they say they are.

    ...And this part?

Repairing the damage will take a lot of time and soul searching and I’m committed to beginning that effort. It is now my full time job

    Bullshit!

I regret that my shame is now shared by the people I cherish dearly,

He used a comma where he should’ve used a period. CRUCIFY HIM!

Also he apologized for getting caught, but not so much to the victims, so you know...your standard 2017 apology.

I wonder if Word is going to come out with a document template for ‘sorry I raped you’?

There aren’t enough sorrys in the world that can overcome the fact that you (Lauer) turned your office into a sex chamber and NBC was cool with you being a pussyhounding powerlord for over 2 decades.

“Some of what is being said about me is untrue or mischaracterized, but there is enough truth in these stories to make me feel embarrassed and ashamed,” he said, adding that he has been forced to look hard at his “troubling flaws.”

Sounds like he studied Charlie Rose’s playbook (I recall him saying something in his “apology” about thinking that feelings were mutual). Rape, sexual assault/ harassment can’t be mischaracterized. Also being a rapist/ sexual predator isn’t a flaw. It’s a fucking defect. I wonder how pious he felt when covering Trump and the Access Hollywood tape and Roy Moore, etc. etc.? None of these apologies are worth the battery power it took their assistants to text them. Someone on another network, I think it was ABC, said his career is over. I doubt it.

“Troubling flaws” are things like having a potty mouth or an inability to resist potato chips. Rape isn’t included on this list.

I’m not reading that shit. Let me guess, I’m super sorry (for getting found out), it was a mistake, I thought it was consensual, I’m a better man now, I hope to learn from this, I’m going to seek help, I’m sorry I hurt my family. Fuck right off. You’re a predator and your apology is worth jack and shit.

I’m wondering when one of them will be honest and say “Yeah I did it. Why? Because I could get away with it. I’ve got plenty of money to live on and pay off lawsuits and the statute of limitations will keep me out of jail. Who needs fame when you have infamy? And if you put me back in my job I will absolutely do it again. Ball’s in your court.” It would be a change at least.
