I still don’t understand how they were charging her if the state is a 1-party consent state...does anyone have an explanation for that part?

The only thing I can think of is with the daughter being a minor, it may not be possible for her to give legal consent.

And that’s just my wild, I Am Not A Laywer guess

Oh man, that headline had me scared/angry. Glad I read the article.

They always tell you to reach out and speak with them when something goes wrong at school but when you do, they’re ineffective at best and antagonistic at worst. That’s why I told my daughter that if she we’ve exhausted all options, I have no problem going to bat for her if she has to let someone’s child catch her hands.

Exactly, schools want to know why people do this or why kids decide to beat the shit out of each other? Because they don’t care. They might do just enough to legally cover their own asses, but that’s it.

This. Now that mom is out that Bond money. She’s had her name smeared all over town. She’s out the time she had to take to go to court over this bullshit. And that doesn’t even account for whether she had to pay her own lawyer. Fuck that School and Fuck that city PD for ever justifying that bullshit.

I want to know who at the school was so full of themselves that they thought it would be positive or productive to report the mom to the police here? Jesus Christ.

I’m glad the authorities came to their senses. Charging her with a felony was an insanely OTT response to a routine parent-school administrator dispute.

When I first caught a headline about a mom being charged for putting a recording device to catch bullies, I was like, huh, why? That’s weird.

Now I see her picture. Got it. Situation Normal, All Fucked Up (snafu).

Unless the law in Virginia runs counter to all anti-eavesdropping laws enacted by other states, I can’t understand how charges were brought in the first place. An expectation of privacy underlies these laws, and I can’t see where a recorder in a backpack or desk in an open classroom violates this. Plus the delinquency charge is absolute garbage.

The prosecutors office there is garbage.

Hmm. Didn’t hear an apology to either Ms. Sims or her daughter for the school creating such a desperate situation in the first place, and then prosecuting someone who has dared to complain about the school system, for a very innocent and sensible act that she surely didn’t know was illegal.
