Of course IX is the end of the Skywalker saga “from a certain point of view”. Rey is from a no-name family at least and a Kenobi at best and Ben is a Solo, unless he chooses to hyphenate.

What makes you think there’s no chance she’s a Skywalker?

She’s young, she prob doesnt want to be locked into a thing for like 2 decades like the Avengers.

And the scope of SW is prob rather daunting too. Dont burn out. I think its too early to ask that question anyway.

I blame Mark Hamill for insisting she give him piggyback rides to and from set. It was a hidden clause in her contract.

Can’t say I blame her. No actor wants to be typecast.

In other news, Natalie Portman came out in support of Daisy Ridley. She went as far to suggest that Ridley should just sleepwalk through the role if she wanted her character to be written out of future installments in the series.

I wish they would just recast someone else as Jane Foster and maintain Thor’s relationship with her, it just seems like a disappointing waste of story potential to drop her character entirely and (I think) would be far more interesting if done right then trying to match Thor up with some other Marvel character.

Maybe lampshade the recasting in a heartfelt moment between the two as they discuss how much each has changed in their time apart.

Why are we assuming the current Star Wars chunk of movies is going to be a Trilogy? There is literally nothing stopping Disney from just continuing the story a la Marvel.

I think it would actually be awesome if they did a time jump and the next set of stories was a 100 years later. It could still involve some Skywalker descendants but it could also start the stories fresh. Show the New Republic that has solidified into a new galactic government and present it with a threat - maybe this time outside one?

And if the actors from this one feel like doing some more films later it could be like Rogue One or Han Solo flashback.

They tried that in the comics. It was ...okay? Definitely a product of its time, but not the worst thing in the EU.

I would guess that the real answer is simple.

She wants an acting career beyond Star Wars.

Harrison Ford is the best example from the original trilogy of someone who moved beyond his role as Han Solo, first as Indiana Jones, but even beyond that. I think it likely that Daisy would like to have a career like that.

What she needs is a hiatus from Star Wars, which hopefully all the actors will get after IX.

Also, each of the first two trilogies is based around a small group of characters, and those characters largely do not carry over to the next. Obi-wan Kenobi is in the first trilogy as a major character and in the second as a mentor. This pattern is followed in the third trilogy with Luke appearing as a mentor, though until we see VIII, we won’t know the size of his role.

The first trilogy ends with the rise of the Empire. The second trilogy ends with the fall of the Empire. We don’t know how the third trilogy ends, but if they want to go on after IX, then they need to think about where it is going. Sure, the third trilogy could end with the rise of the First Order to full galactic dominance, but that feels a little like starting by remaking #4 and finishing by remaking #3.

I also think that they could continue Star Wars as single movies that are sort of like a mixture of a mainstream movie and a Star Wars Story movie. They could have a standalone Poe Dameron movie, but have it advance the mainstream timeline, if you will. They could do the same with a Finn standalone movie. They could push forward the story of the Resistance (or whatever it becomes) against the First Order (or whatever replaces it or it becomes). Sort of like the way the Captain America and Avengers movies are intertwined.

This idea I just had made me chuckle. Imagine a pair of buddy movies starring Poe and Finn, only one movie is essentially Poe with Finn as sidekick and the other Finn with Poe as sidekick.

I feel sure that Disney knows where Star Wars is headed with VIII and IX, and all we have is pure speculation, but starting with a more balanced conflict between the Resistance and the First Order, I am not sure what comes after IX because I cannot see how IX ends.

The first two trilogies each end with the fall of the dominant order. There is no truly dominant order in VII. The movie starts with the First Order dealing a huge blow to the New Republic, and ends with the Resistance dealing a major blow to the First Order. So, there is no sure sign as to which way things are going. Two more movies of maintaining the status quo seems like it will be disappointing, so I doubt they will go there.

Sorry to go on so long, I kept hoping that I would find some enlightening revelation. Not that I know the future, but I really cannot see where this is going.

I think what will happen is a large proportion of the New Order defect and work with the resistance over some danger bigger than all of them, it will bring the sides together.

Actually, I sort of like that one.

This trilogy (7, 8, 9) would be the defeat of Snokes and either the defeat or redemption of Kylo Ren. The defection of a large part of his army could be part of his defeat.

Or...what if this threat is coming from the far side of the section of the Galaxy controlled by the First Order? What if Snokes’ attempt to defeat the Republic and Resistance is in order to create a military strong enough to defeat this new threat?

And what could that threat be? Clearly, it has to be the Reapers, from Mass Effect.

Done. Figured it all out with your help. Now I know how the movies beyond IX will go.

I am going to have to read that article for context on this:

[In the same article, J.J. Abrams also said he felt that Episode IX was the end of the Skywalker saga that has driven the nine-film story]

... I don’t want Rey to be a Skywalker (and I would actually be surprised if she is ...or rather that they would make that choice), but am I the only one that finds some implications built in to Abrams’ comment?
