Just so I understand this correctly, you are saying an article is reporting on what is alleged in a lawsuit - referencing and quoting what these women put in court documents is inaccurate because it doesn’t fit your perception of your school and how Title IX should be handled?

    LOL. Pls.

Whelp, as a proud Alumni of HU, who proudly gives my money to support the school, I will be contacting alumni affairs and sharing this article with the alumni association at large. We are on it.. This dude is grass.

I’m not surprised. Several friends and my own mother went to Howard. I’ve heard all of the stories of things Black men are allowed to do versus Black women at that school when it comes to work, grades, honor code violations, etc. There’s a hierarchy of protection there and it goes Black men and that’s it.

    Same mess, different day.

It’s not just that HBCU, though. To paraphrase Monique, this is a family problem.

Agreed. I just know of personal stories from this particular school.

I will forego adding any commentary about how Howard’s inaction is indicative of the general rape apologist and passive behavior toward sexual assault and abuse that is prevalent in black families past and present. The “keep it in the family” mentality that protects abusers while neglecting the abused is breaking our women down.

    This shit has to stop.

The SpelHouse problem is unfortunately fairly notorious. But I think other HBCUs (and, you know, other “community” enclaves outside of it as well, which I think is a big part of what Monique is pointing out) like to point at it so nobody will notice the three fingers pointing back at self. Kind of a “look over there!” technique.

When I read the title, the first thing I thought was this is rapist who is a star athlete and if his team is winning, that team is putting butts in the seats, selling school logo merchandise and making the school money and the administrators very happy.

Its sad but I have a feeling that they have rationalized how wins per rapes are ok ratio, if it gets them a new laboratory, library or some new wing.

I went to school there. I don’t think it’s inaction is necessarily because of apologist behavior. I think it is an extension of the rank disregard that is shown towards students by the administration. Unanswered phone calls, a lack of transparency and non-adherence to policy are par for the course. It is unsurprising that Howard’s culture of unprofessionalism would also be on display in their Title IX office. The allegations are disgusting. Hopefully, this lawsuit will force them to realize that they are there to serve students and keep them on their toes when they handle such important and personal matters.

Hearing about the culture you’re talking about is making me hesitant to apply there.

I just graduated from HU in may and I will say that while it has its problems (and there are many) I don’t regret going there. The admin side of things is inefficient to put it nicely but the community of students and professors is something I know I wouldn’t have found elsewhere and this is coming from someone who only applied there as a backup. Of course everyone’s experience will be different but i wouldn’t not apply. You can always visit campus, talk to more students and in the end you may decide not to go but at least it was an informed decision.
