    4. Will Markle be a Princess?

In spite of all the #BlackPrincess hashtags circulating on social media, don’t look for her to be called Princess Meghan. To obtain the title of princess, you have to be born into royalty. In spite of all the confusion, Diana was not a princess; she was officially “Her Royal Highness, Diana, Princess of Wales,” never Princess Diana.

It’s too much royal history to go into, but suffice it to say that Queen Elizabeth will most likely bestow a Duchess title upon Markle, just as she did with Kate, who is now known as “Catherine, the Duchess of Cambridge.” The duke and duchess of Sussex title has been available for over a century, so royal watchers are banking on that.

To be super pedantic, the Queen did not bestow a Duchess title on Kate. She made her grandson William the Duke of Cambridge (and Earl of Strathearn, and Baron Carrickfergus). We refer to Catherine as “Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge,” not because she is a duchess in her own right, but because she’s married to a duke. Likewise, if Harry is made Duke of Sussex, Meghan will be “Her Royal Highness Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, (Countess of Somewhere in Scotland, Lady Somewhere in Northern Ireland)” by virtue of her marriage to Harry.

But, still, Meghan is living the dream of literally millions of American girls (and little gay fancy boys), so, like, you go girl.

Also, she may be referred to as Princess Henry* of Wales, as the wife of the Prince of Wales. Greetings, fellow pedant and Anglophile!

*His birth name is actually Henry, with “Harry” being a nickname

Just so you know, you’re not alone—Mrs. Orca has already schooled me on this very thing.

The Royals. So good. Better than everyone else (and not just at bleeding).

The Royals. So important. Much more important than everyone else (and not just because they’re super-rich for simply existing).

I seem to recall somebody having a revolution to get rid of them. But I can’t remember why. It must have been a big mistake, at any rate. Nice to see history correcting itself.

You mean that Revolution where black people remained in slavery while white men (only) waxed poetic about freedom? All because they didn’t want to pay taxes on tea (and slaves) to the British?

Actually, I was thinking of the French revolution, but the one you mean will do. Every revolution is infused with some amount of hypocrisy, but, historically, white folk have honed it to an art form.

After all, if Harry isn’t shying away from acknowledging and protecting Meghan’s blackness, why should we?

I think it’s important to remember that statement was issued on Nov 8th. I was delighted that he came at them not informally but direct from the palace. A royal rebuke of the press coverage from the son of Diana Spencer is noteworthy by itself. That he speaks directly to the racism and sexism in the coverage AND releases statement on Election Day in Markle’s home country? The Palace knew how that statement would be interpreted.

She’ll be fine. Judging by the interview after the announcement, she’s not afraid to speak her mind and Harry treats her like an equal. The trolls won’t shut up, but I suspect she’s strong enough to handle it.

Also, she should be considered the second British royal of African descent - Queen Charlotte (wife of King George III - yes, that one) was German, but is directly descended from a black branch of the Portuguese royal family. from the 13th century. This isn’t commonly known nor acknowledged, but if you read a lot of contemporary literature of Queen Charlotte, she’s called, well, plain and ugly, and the descriptions seem to mirror the derogatory descriptions of black people over the centuries. Trolls never die.

Harry doesn’t seem to give a fuck, in some of the best ways. Remember, he was the guy that insisted on getting deployed to a combat zone with his troops instead of hiding in the palace.

They are going to have cute kids. Way cuter than William and Kate’s kids.

I don’t see why everyone thinks the babies will be brown? Meghan is pretty light and Harry could not be paler. Most 3/4, 1/4 black babies look pretty white.

Exactly. My maternal grandfather was mixed, and my maternal grandmother was Irish. Two of their 4 children were redheads, one brunette who was fair complected, and one olive complected brunette who favored my grandfather. Every one of their children (save myself) has had ginger babies.

      The ginger gene is strong.
