Re: Actually, the New England Historical Society’s Chris Child’s alludes to a document that has never been seen or verified, so his findings are bunk.

    Illustration for article titled

Warren isn’t likely “Cherokee”. I posted several links yesterday in the other article, but Warren’s family has never reached out to verify their supposed genealogical link to the Cherokee tribes, which keep meticulous genealogical records, second only to Mormons or the Royal families. Oklahoma or not, most people who self-ID as Cherokee rarely have any Native connection. As I mentioned yesterday, Native ID is about more than blood, so the one drop rule has no application here.

    http://www.slate.com/articles/news_and_politics/history/2015/10/cherokee_blood_why_do_so_many_americans_believe_they_have_cherokee_ancestry.html

Here’s a link that covers the practice of white people basically paying money to buy falsified documents that gave them “Native” identity so that they may take advantage of the enrollment benefits for tribes: https://indiancountrymedianetwork.com/history/people/paying-play-indian-dawes-rolls-legacy-5-indians/

I’m likely going to get grayed for this, which is fine, but I have Native friends to whom their identity and their struggle is sacred. I like Elizabeth Warren, but this is not okay. She continues to perpetuate this Cherokee princess myth that white people have been using for now centuries to further exploit an already exploited group of people.

I understand your points. But it’s important to understand that this is not what happened. This is not what it’s about. This is not what Trump did. What you’ve outlined is a separate issue.

re: Slurs. That’s the thing that I don’t understand about folks: when a person from a particular race/culture/religion says a certain word/term is offensive, then it is offensive. And honestly... I cannot say that its only white people, who don’t understand this. I’ve heard our very own called Asian women ‘Ling-Ling’. Or make ‘Gypsy’ references to Rromani people (by the way, on the safe side: don’t call them that, to their faces).

“Gypsy” is one that really gets me riled up... you can’t swing a dead cat on Instagram without hitting 50 or 60 white women who decorate their houses in twinkle lights and thrifted art and call themselves gypsies because they’re free spirits who don’t like to wear shoes.

Yeah, and the thing that people don’t seem to understand is that Trump and Co. were using the name “Pocahontas” intentionally in a derogatory, mocking way towards Sen. Warren. It is not the name itself, it is HOW it is used. But they are so dense that they then pivot towards a defense about the name instead of their actions. I doubt that Trump could even tell you who Pocahontas was.

I kind of enjoy the moments where Trump drops whatever pretenses he’s under to be an actual adult and just flat out is as racist as he actually is.

I honestly would have more respect for Trump if he called Kaepernick and the kneeling NFL players ungrateful niggers. That’s what he wants to do, and that’s what his supporters think. At least that would be honest. At least we’d be coming at this discussion about how racist Trump and his supporters are from a place of honesty, instead of this ho-hum “come on, they’re not REALLY racist, the only care about the flag” bullshit.

Trump calls Elizabeth Warren Pochahontas because the only negative thing he can say about her is that she is (very technically) a person of color. If she was just a white lady he’d be at a loss for how to respond to him. His only go to is to slur her.

If she was just white, he would just deride her physical appearance.

I love Liz Warren, but I do think going around touting your American Indian heritage or allowing yourself to be listed as a minority when you’re 1/32 and go through life as white otherwise is a little weird (I wouldn’t do it and I’m a leeeeetle bit American Indian and grew up with my grandfather talking about it).

The one way she is a “minority” in the statistical sense of the word is that she’s a Harvard Law prof who grew up poor and didn’t attend any Ivy League schools. She was actually pretty rare in that regard.

Setting aside the obvious lack of a need to even ask the question about Barack Obama, can you imagine Bush ‘43, Bush ‘41 or, hell, even Ronald Reagan at his most senile, befouling that moment with a petty potshot at a political opponent, racist remark or not?

It’s hard to imagine it, even if only because the lack of tact is a bad look politically.

What I find the most mind boggling about this is not that he would use the name Pocahontas this way (because he does this type of thing every day) but would decide during a ceremony honoring U.S. Army Code Talkers to make a pointless political jab.

Its not only racist, its tacky.

I guess we ignore than like Trump ignores common sense and decency. Also, most of them have only one or two posts to their name so those accounts were created for the sole purpose of making those now-ignored comments. What a full life they lead...

I really hate that the only reason this is a “debate” is because the community doesn’t have a strong enough lobby to have squashed this shit in its crib. You can basically say anything about the indigenous people here, and people will barely blink. Like, we’re still having “debates” about whether cartoon Native American mascots are appropriate. It’s literal insult on top of injury when it comes to them.

Why is calling Elizabeth Warren “Pocahontas” racist? ‘Cause it’s racist AF.

Add to it: the Powhatan and the Cherokee are from different parts of the fucking country with different histories and traditions. And the men being honored were part of a tradition that span many indigenous languages and histories/migrations/traditions. The slam goes deep.

This, exactly. The Cherokee nations started where the Powhatan ended. It’s like calling an Indian person the slur for a person from the Middle East... not only is it racist, but it’s incorrect.

At this rate, we’re a year away from him throwing caution to the wind and straight up calling a political opponent a “fucking nigger”. Then Shuckabee Sanders will look April Ryan and Glenn Thrush both in the eye simultaneously and swear that he was quoting a rap lyric and wasn’t racist at all before throwing a Nazi salute and the next question to Breitbart.
