“The sports-performance car was a gift from his brother Los Angeles Lakers point guard Lonzo Ball.”

This is the crux of the issue that has multiple layers to why it’s problematic. I know Lonzo is his brother but this type of gift and how maintenance of this car will cause the NCAA to forever be looking over UCLA and Steve Alford’s shoulder.

Yeah...Lonzo and li’l Angelo are playing it fast and loose with the NCAAs definition of gifts from family not being counted the same as gifts from others.

The stealing and the driving around a car that could fund several college tuitions are disgusting.

We black folk have lost sight of what is important. There are many folk that died trying to give us the chance to go to college and succeed. Our parents, grandparents and great-grandparents had to take ugliness and live a certain way because of the hue of our skin. We owe them. Stealing sunglasses that cost a part of one’s house note and riding around in a Ferrari doesn’t cut it. Going to class and learning and obtaining that degree is what does.

Don’t get me wrong. I want folks to get paid. But sometimes being in a haste can shortchange one’s monetary potential. Yes, you can get that million now. But if you stay in your lane and try to do something for yourself that NO ONE CAN TAKE AWAY FROM YOU, instead of a million there will be two million or many more. And you probably won’t be sitting on the bench for five years before you break out into a superstar either.

As Magic Johnson stated back in the day, “If you are good, they will find you.”

      ............

I’m trying to understand the linkage here. Other than driving a car he can’t afford to pay for, LiAngelo Ball is known to be a solid student. If he weren’t an athlete, you would simply assume somebody in his family has money which is no different than trust fund kids having similar types of cars as freshman.

This is about basketball, the flashy LA image, and being a one and done player.

This isn’t about grades or sunglasses or cars second chances or even money.

This is squarely about KA-J not liking douchey shit. Truthfully, this may be one topic where most Americans can agree - douchey shit sucks ass. It sucks slimy shrimp-cocktail carrying douche wiener.

In closing: fuck, douches suck, I hate you Griff - - and who the fuck names their kid Griff? It’s like they chemically devised the most rapey lacrosse player name in lab. Fuck you Griff.

I gotta agree with him. Its a douchey look and could make some people think you more about the money than the love of the game. This is right up there with other dumb sports flossin moves like some 1st round draft pick buying a $25 million dollar house on a $30 million dollar contract.

Why should anyone love the game though?? The more I learn about the sports culture the less I think there is anything to love...

I’m shocked that a educated, versatile “man about town” like LaVar Ball would have a less than stellar thinking child.

      Shocked I say.

What Cap is speaking on for me is the bad optics of LiAngelo already having a GIANT F’N bullseye on his back thanks to his father plus he just got popped for creating an international incident by shoplifting in a communist country which caused his dad to have beef with the Idiot in Chief of this country and now he’s driving around campus in a super sports car showing no remorse over his actions by flaunting his family’s wealth.

This is similar to Biggie dropping subliminal diss tracks against Tupac right after he died on a LA radio show. Be warned, just because you can do something does not mean you should do it or you better be ready for the consequences of your actions.

The Ball family is just gross, period. They are utterly devoid of even the simplest of social graces.

LiAngelo is doing too much flossing around campus in a damn super car, but OTOH it was a gift that his brother gave to him, and there are probably not many 18 year olds around that will turn that car down. That said I think the high profile opens him up to more scrutiny than the average ball player would get from the NCAA and their labyrinthine rules over permissible conduct with respect to gifts and money.

That kind of flashy gift-giving early in the career of a sport known the chew someone up before 30 on family is shady, the gift going to a college student caught shoplifting is tacky.

Team Abdul-Jabbar. Show some class; you can’t afford sunglasses and yet you can cruise around in a $100K car? Come on, now.
