Since 1997, Congress has paid at least $15 million to settle complaints about sexual harassment, racial discrimination, and violations of the Americans With Disabilities Act under the umbrella of the Congressional Accountability Act (CAA) of 1995.

The payments made to Rep. Conyers’s alleged victim came out of his taxpayer-funded office budget. Generally, though, these payments aren’t made by members of Congress or their offices. They’re made by a special section of the Department of the Treasury established under Section 415 of the CAA — and ultimately by the American taxpayer.

They need to fire everyone in Congress, start over with stricter rules, shorter terms and do away with bullshit like this hush money fund.

It won’t though as few rarely know who their constituency rep actually is outside of which Party they belong to.

Party politics turns hundreds of individuals that should be kept in check into two nebulous blocks that people would vote for even if the candidate was a donkey.

The system also won’t change as long as we feel that nothing can’t be done to stop them.

I’m sure glad MLK and the Civil Rights Movement folks didn’t believe that there was nothing that could be done.

Why in the ever loving fuck are black people giving up seats (on the judiciary committee, REALLY??) when white supremacist sexual predators occupy the White House and the bulk of the executive branch??

We don’t need this, it doesn’t help anyone move forward, fucking STOP.

Oh because he (allegedly, but probably at this point) sexually harassed two women - Women of color, I believe - and we have functioning moral compasses.

We need black men and women in power. We do not need black predators in power, as they only differ from white predators in their aim.

Like, this sucks. But it sucks in the sense that this man took action that *he knew* would cost him his head if discovered but he did it anyway.

I think Conyers has been in there way too long yet something about this bothers me. We’ve got a white dude who’s a sexual predator, by his own words, in the white house, but it’s Conyers giving up an important seat on the Judiciary? WTH, did the democratic establishment force him to? Something does not feel or smell right here. Maybe Sen. Franken will resign.

My humble two cents: guys like Conyers and Franken should either relinquish their committee seats or resign, but only if Trump and any other GOP politicians with sexual misconduct history match these actions.

It’s a disgusting double standard for anyone to expect Democrats to be accountable or their actions (they should) while pussy-grabbers and pedophiles get to hide behind their denials and their party’s thirst for tax cuts.

They should all go, but any reckoning that only nets people willing to take responsibility while skipping those who reject responsibility is not a reckoning, just bad examples.

Sometimes it’s worth doing the right thing. Standing up for these abusers is just wrong, and it’s not helping anyone.

And, I if Dems get this right (getting rid of Franken and Conyers), they’ll be able to weaponize this in 2018 and 2020 against the GOP, by being the party that’s firmly pro-women, and able to hold their members accountable.

Nah. Democrats can be accountable for their own and continue to demand that Republicans hold themselves accountable as well. If Democrats don’t, they’re every bit as craven and disgusting as the Republicans are.

Also, not holding predators accountable is just another way of saying “fuck women and their struggles”.

He needs to resign like, yesterday. Fool is showing up to meetings in pajamas and needs assistants to baby him and make sure he takes his meds on time? Goodbye. The longer he stays, the more damage he does to his own legacy, the black caucus, and the Democratic Party.

I’ve heard stories about Conyers dating back to when I lived in DC in the late 80s. He needs to take two seats and shut up, and Pelosi needs to shut up with him — her especially; she’s busy downing others for sex abuse allegations, yet waves Conyers’ flag? Please. Pick one.

Now, while we’re at it, we’ve seen Conyers and Franken. I KNOW those aren’t the only two on the Hill. Where’s the others? (and where’s the Republicans? Y’all know good and damn well there’s not only Democrats involved in this Mickey Mouse party...)
