Well I guess that’s ONE way to make the point you were arguing against.

Fucking jackass. Seriously. This is why gun control is NEEDED. I argue with a guy at work all the time - he’s a responsible gun owner, has a gun safe, etc etc and so on. He has a 10 year old who knows how to operate a firearm safely, and also knows not to touch. I keep telling him that he’s not the gun owner I worry about.

The fuckstick in this article IS.

Had that conversation with my mom recently.

I am a responsible gun owner. Which is exactly why I support certain regulations. Because, as a responsible gun owner, those regulations are not going to prevent me from owning or shooting my guns.

The only people that are really worried about regulations are the types that think they are going to protect themselves from a tyrannical government with their guns and that any and all regulations are the way that a tyrannical government is going to stop them. No, honey baby. DRONES are how the government is going to stop you. The government doesn’t need regulations to stop you from stopping them.

But if you are crazy enough to believe this sort of bullshit, then you are the type of person who needs a little more regulating.

WTF? Isn’t the accidental discharge of a weapon resulting in bodily harm a crime?

Because it was an accident and he didn’t mean to cause harm. Not being flippant. Those are the reason the cops will state, and this reaction is actually frustratingly common.

He’s an idiot and here’s exactly why:

Chambering a round requires a separate action from inserting the magazine. That’s why people in movies and TV (aside from dramatic effect) always pull the slide back after taking them out of the holster; they are making room for the magazine to push a round up and then, when the slide comes forward, the round is pushed into the barrel.

A lot of cops do this when they first load the gun and then re-add a bullet to the magazine to add one more round to the gun and to avoid the delay in operating the slide. So a 19 round magazine plus 1 in the chamber, for 20.

There is nothing in a gun to tell that a round is in the chamber; the ‘loaded’ indicator is only an indicator that a round is available to be pushed by the magazine spring into position where it can be pushed into the chamber when the slide comes forward again.

Here’s a cop who had a round chambered:

Mostly it’s not on film - usually they shoot the lockers at the station playing ‘quick-draw.’

My guess is that he dropped the mag and locked the slide back to show the gun was safe. When he reinserted the mag he hit the slide release and a round was chambered.

Regarding your assertion of how loaded chamber indicators work you are wrong. You’re confusing it with something—I’m unsure what. The loaded chamber indicators has nothing to do with the pistol’s magazine. In fact no magazine has to be present for it to work. It raises (for physical identification) or shows a red “flag” (for visible identification) when a round is loaded into the chamber. Simple as that. How they messed that up is beyond me (but he is 80 years old, so there’s that).

Longtime reader, first time to comment. You all at The Root have kept me sane every day at my job (all white law firm. I’m def the token black woman/person, and that shit is rough at times.)

I laughed SOOOOOO hard at this one. I live in Memphis. Better known as a shit hole. (Originally from NY. Trying to get back. Anybody have any job openings?) Have a co-worker from “Strawberry Plains”, TN (also right outside of Knoxville, just like the podunk ass town in the article) and this shit had me dyin’! These assbackwards mfers neither have any shame, nor the capacity to be embarrassed.

To address a couple of points noted by other commenters:

*Yes, TN most def does not receive its due recognition for being by far one of the absolute shittiest places in the galaxy right alongside MS, LA, AL, FL, and TX, in no particular order, because they’re ALL equally shitty.

** #NeverForget Pulaski, TN: City of the birthplace of the KKK

*** Seriously asking, anybody know of any openings in NY? Asking for a friend

What really pisses me off is this is exactly the kind of person that guns need to be taken away from, and no one is saying that.

He is not a Responsible Gun Owner. He shot his wife (and himself) in church. He is exactly the kind of idiot that would leave his gun out for his great-grandson to shoot himself in the head while playing. He is the kind of person I expect will wake up in the middle of the night, thinking there’s a burglar in the house, and shoot his wife (AGAIN) who got up to get a drink of water earlier.

Here’s what responsible gun control looks like: “You have to prove and get accredited to own guns and carry them. You will have to periodically come back for testing to show that you retain your abilities. If ANYTHING comes up that shows that you are a danger or otherwise irresponsible enough to question your gun ownership, they will be taken away.”

And yet here we are. This 80 year-old senile moron will continue to be a walking red flag, along with millions of others just like him.

I agree with everything that you said, 100%, but I’m now imagining a day in the lfe of this couple, where she repeatedly gets accidentally shot, and begins taking more and more ridiculous measures to avoid it, only for it to happen again and again. Like an old WB cartoon.

Someone give these two a web series. I’d watch.

“charges were not filed.” I don’t understand this. I can get a ticket for speeding because something bad *might* happen, but someone does something far more reckless, and something bad *did* happen, and no charges. Guns are just like freaking immune to common sense laws.

He should be charged with criminal negligence. Rule #1 of handling a gun is “treat every gun as if it is loaded” which means YOU DON’T PULL THE FUCKING TRIGGER WHEN YOU AREN’T INTENDING TO SHOOT SOMETHING. There is nothing “accidental” about these incidents. Someone deliberately did something that resulted in the discharging of a firearm, causing harm to his dumb-ass self and someone else who just happened to be in the room with him.

Guns aren’t fucking toys. If you can’t handle one properly you shouldn’t be allowed to handle it at all. Bet you $100 this guy still thinks of himself as a “responsible gun owner” who carries in case he needs to be the “good guy with a gun.” We need to stop indulging people’s fantasies that, with limited training, they are somehow going to save the day.

It still baffles me why the NRA is so adamantly opposed to mandating even the most basic firearms safety training. That alone would’ve prevented this.

Rule #1: Treat every weapon as if it were loaded.

Relying on an “indicator” is dumb (and I’ve never heard of such a thing on any weapon). Relying on the another man’s word is dumb. Assuming that a weapon isn’t loaded is dumb (even when it’s disassembled, it can be loaded. I’ve seen people learn this lesson the hard way). Person #2 should’ve never squeezed the trigger (but then again, he probably never handled a weapon before either, so I don’t know how much fault he should be assigned).

Rule #2: Never point your weapon at anything you don’t intend to shoot.

Compounding the problem was Person #2's failure to keep the muzzle away from anything and anybody before he squeezed the trigger. As the owner of the firearm, Person #1 should’ve never handed over his weapon without unloading and clearing it, and he should’ve ensured that Person #2 kept the muzzle in a safe direction.

If there is a reason for not having guns in a church, this is it.

NB: Some clarifications to note: The Ruger was a .380 caliber, not a .318. The former is a pistol, the latter is a rifle. There should also be some clarification that before the owner reinserted the magazine, the slide was pulled back to clear it when he initially unloaded it. When the slide was released with a loaded magazine re-inserted, that chambered a round. Failure on the owner’s part to understand this critical function this goes back to why weapons handling training (with periodic refreshers) should be mandatory for all gun purchases.

I’ll ask the same question I asked my ex-roomate when he accidently fired his AR-15 through his bedroom wall, through my room, and into the home next door.

Even if you thought the magazine was empty and there wasn’t one in the chamber, why are you pulling the trigger? It either accomplishes nothing or blows a hole in something(or someone).

Thankfully I was downstairs watching football and not in the room. The damned round went through the wall, out my window and through their window and hit a big screen TV. The neighbors were home and were super pissed, but since we were all in the Navy (neighbors too), my buddy convinced them to handle it without involving the police.

We also stripped his at home 2nd amendment rights and made him keep his weapons in a friends gunsafe.
