If I catch someone in Blackface, I’m not confronting them. I’m calling the police with an anonymous tip that they were acting strange and let the sparks fly.

“The combined intent of the couple was to portray how funny it would be for two political figures who were at odds with each other to go to a party together,”

Yet she didn’t dress up as Clinton, the trumpers perpetual boogie man. Interesting.

That was my thought, if only there was a white female political rival for Trump that would fit this narrative...

You’d have to wonder if being asked that question (why not Hillary then?) would get the gears churning long enough for her to realize why a black democrat is “more at odds” with Trump.

    Dummy.

And she was doubly disrespectful for thinking that Ms. Wilson would ever wear a hat as basic and plain as Jean’s life, personality, and “accomplishments.”

That’s it, I’ve decided to run for office. My platform will be the passing of a law that allows open handed slaps to the face for doing stupid shit like this.

You got my vote! Just asking though, what’s your stance on Pumpkin Pie, offensively bland squash confection, or horrible Sweet Potato Pie mimic?

I believe that people who enjoy Pumpkin pie need our sympathy as they have strayed far from the Lord’s light, there’s a crisis in ‘merica that needs to be addressed my friend. Sweet Potato is the way home!

Being white I admit, I have a hard time understanding the why Blackface is wrong.

HOWEVER I have no problems understanding that it IS wrong. You won’t find me partaking in it, just having a hard time to being...empathetic to it? I think that’s right? Sort of like knowing something versus being able to feel it.

Being in rural NY can make things difficult to connect 100% to.

      Fine, I’ll bite.

Our skin color was/is used by White people to justify treating us as sub-human animals. After dehumanizing us, enslaving us like animals, stealing our resources and damning us to a permanent underclass, White people enjoy ‘wearing’ our skin in comical ways as if they’re pretending to be a bunny by putting on big ears or pretending to be a mouse by painting whiskers on their faces. The implications of ‘wearing’ that which your ancestors have hunted, slaved and Othered is bad enough even if we were talking about fur coats. But think about it. Whiskers, antlers, floppy ears- those are signifying characteristics which personify whole beings in quick, stereotypical reductions so a narrative can continue.

This story is about a bunny. What makes a bunny a bunny is its ears and its cute wittle nose. You quickly picture a little, fuzzy a-nim-inal with floppy ears and a cotton tail. You don’t care if the bunny is nice or mean, pays its taxes, or has faced 500 years of oppression. The bunny’s heritage and worldview are never considered. Bunny=Ears, Tail, Nose.

It’s the same with blackface. No matter who this person is, what kind of person he or she is, blackface reminds us that the most striking, important facet of our personhood for White people is the color of our skin. And not just any color; the color which has been cited for generations as the reason it’s okay for White people to slave and murder and rape and disenfranchise us. That color marks us for persecution, but somehow that color is also entertainment for them. Our skin is terrifying and must be beaten back and controlled, but can also be decoration for the entertainment of the oppressor. Like a bearskin rug, or a fox fur. All while telling us they don’t see color.

Blackface proves all they can see is color.

      Any questions?

I definitely think about the bit with Dan Akroyd in blackface in Trading Places, or Gene Wilder in Silver Streak, or Hugh Laurie in Jeeves & Wooster and wonder if those are offensive. Like, Jane Krakowski wore blackface and a football costume to dress up as as Lynn Swann for her couples “Black Swan” costume on 30 Rock. Is it meant to be offensive that she’s in costume as a black man, or does it get a pass because her character is hilariously narcissistic and it’s clear that she is an idiot?

I’m white, and I have a distance from the hurt blackface causes to be able to tell myself “surely the intent in a particular instance is clearly understood enough to not be offensive to POC,”but I can also believe that it hurts others regardless of intent. Blackface is probably going to remain one of those things that is taboo because of the history of bad intentions rather than future potential to harm others. Even instances like I’ve listed above are tainted by idiots like the deputy running around as a racist caricature.

I feel like the ideal response to seeing someone in blackface is to spray them in the face with a firehose.
