So then can I ask you, with no disrespect, WTF is wrong with you for wanting to move there? The South as a whole has been trash and we all know that. The Deep South, like Alabama and any other area where even in 2017 a Black person shouldn’t go out after dark is a whole other level of trash compounded with backwards ass thinking. No Black or any other person of color should ever consider living in Alabama or any other shit Southern part of the country.

  Assuming you’re black, like me, then you must have relatives who live down south, and I bet they wouldn’t trade it for any other place in the world. No matter how racist, backwards, and rundown those towns may get, its home to them.
  Not saying it makes sense, but to turn a phrase, ‘be it ever so crappy, there’s no place like home.’ That’s the same reason southern black people identify with southern pride, even though that’s a lot of deep-fried Confederate bullshit. Some of its irrational, and some of it is a sign of our perseverance; making the most of a bad situation.

  This is so, so true. I’ve always said that Alabama is basically Mississippi with actual cities. The terrible thing is that they are ashamed of the one thing that makes them slightly more progressive than Mississippi. Alabama has cities but doesn’t invest in them; well except maybe Huntsville, but that place is basically a giant suburb.

In the DC area, “bama” has been a catch-all insult for a very long time. It can be used in both noun (“you a bama”) and adjective (“you a bama-ass bama”) form. Just sayin.

  That’s strange, the general migration was from Alabama to Detroit after the steel industry in Birmingham shit the bed but the auto industry in Detroit was still going. Most of the black folks I meet in Detroit and Chicago tell that their families moved up from Alabama and Mississippi in the ‘60s and ‘70s.

  I am not exactly sure why but the story I get is that it was pretty (also cheap). We had a awesome new house built on top of a mountain and the view was breath taking. It was also VERY rural, the only thing that southerners hate more than blacks is, yankees and I guess we reeked of it. My dads VW Scirocco made it painfully obvious.

I mean, you moved here voluntarily, so that shit’s on you. I have the misfortune of having grown up here and being temporarily forced back. What’s wrong with Alabama? The people. Simple and plain. The people who think “living in cities” was a huge misstep for humanity. Who think owning a passport makes you suspicious. Who think preserving a heritage of ignorance and provincialism (yes, black folks in Alabama are guilty of this, too) is more important than educating and bettering the populace of the state.
