I often agree with the targets of Anonymous (and in this case, their attack didn’t seem to cross the line), but they still kind of feel to me like the fun-house mirror version of the alt-right. Same sort of aggressive and often harrassing tactics (especially when they go after an innocent target, which happens with them more than it should), just for causes I agree with. Still in this case I tip my mask to them.

  There are levels to it. If a group who claims to be Anonymous does something shitty, a bigger more powerful group will make them disavow any connections to Anonymous. They are self policing and do a great job at it.

  True, but there’s so many facets of Anonymous and not all of them are good. When a group becomes so large, there’s factions within factions it’s amazing every time they pull something like this off. But for every good thing they do, there’s a group within somewhere that’s just as willing to do something nefarious for “the lulz”.
