Another well done article, Ms. Kent

    This:

For context, remember that part in the teaser trailer when Klaw is talking to Everett Ross and they are both (but mostly him) obsessing over Wakanda and the fact that these group of black people they have stumbled upon are far advanced than anything they ever imagined? Remember how shook Ross was and how giddy Klaw looked?

That was a powerful, great scene. I was like “aww hell, Coogler ain’t messing around!”

SIDEBAR: Did you know that Sam Wilson, The Falcon, origin story once included his stint as a pimp who was “altered” by the Cosmic Cube/Tesseract to be a sleeper agent, the “perfect” sidekick for Captain America?

Thank you! And yes. Coogler is not messing with us at ALL. I am so glad they got him for this project.

Coogler got the essence of Fox News pitch perfect in that scene. Ross was totally shooked and Klaw was grinning like he was Jesse Watters insulting Asians on the street.

Yeah, “Snap” Wilson/Pimp origin story was the most in your face stereotyped/assimulated crap, ever.

This might seem off-topic and a bit ‘WTF?!’, but it is about the visual depiction of the Dora Milaje. Not only are they featuring black women with darker brown skin tone, but... their bald or they rocking little-to-no hair, which... is pretty big. My own seven-year-old goddaughter kept touching her “short, nappy hair” (as she called it, then) while watching the trailer numerous times. Now, the girl who wanted long, 2A-3A curls and thought her hair was ugly... Is now a girl who proudly showing off her hair in bantu knots and anticipating for next summer, so she can rock a bald head.

It is! But, I will admit: I did have to “excuse myself” to go to the bathroom, so I could openly weep into her mama’s good towels. LOL

Black Panther has been such a fascinating character from the jump, but particularly when he was made the genius leader of a hermit kingdom. And I’m SO FUCKING AMPED for this movie.

What I love about the movie besides the super uber blackness, is that it is finally a black character that is surround by black folk. To many times we get a main character that is black but all the people around him are not. Like how can you be a black person and not have ONE black cohort? No other black people went to super spy , scientist, dipped in the super soup school? WTF???

The thing about Wakanda I love is, yes!! A whole entire country that said, “We good, white folk....don’t need you for shit... And stay the fuck out of here or you will get that ass handed to you. Good day.”

I wish nothing but good for this movie.

The Wakanda Super Science was one of the reasons I loved Al Ewing’s Ultimates and Ultimates2.

Everyone: “Galactus has been eating plants and fucking shit up for millenia!”

      T’Challa “Hold my beer.”

“Well, you better believe that Ruth E. Carter, a black woman, is responsible for the larger-than-life costumes we’ve seen in the previews thus far.”

Thanks for throwing that out. I was about to do some searching for who was behind the amazing classy costumes in the move. Everybody looks so damn GOOD.

Look at her resume on IMDB. She’s got the goods. It’s not shocking to me Coogler pulled her for this gig and she totally killed it. Everything about this movie looks gorgeous.

I don’t think that Black Panther as a single movie is going to have the long term impact you (and I) hope for, but that would be nice. It would be nice to see kids embrace a hero fully conscious of his African roots. Regular exposure with cartoons or maybe a Lego version of Black Panther would help more than a one-off movie no matter the size of the block buster IMHO.
I recently bought the Black Panther cartoon TV-14 series that aired on BET in 2010 to prep my kids for it but after watching it I decided it was for a slightly maturer audience than that and so, not for them right now. Nevertheless, I am drooling to see this Black-majority, all star cast.

Black Panther aside though let’s not forget tv series such as Marvel’s Luke Cage (2016-present Netflix); the movie, Spawn (non-Marvel or DC anti-hero 1997—just before the Blade Trilogy began in 1998); and Statick Shock TV series (2000-2004). I especially like Static Shock because it’s kid-friendly and sends a positive message in every episode. Also though the hero is African American, he does explore his African roots throughout several episodes.

The trailer is better than most movies that came out this year. I’m very excited for February. I don’t care if we get a snowstorm, I’m still going the first weekend.

I like how you pointed out how timely the story is to our real lives. We have an orange dictator who wants to put Black people where he thinks we belong (the very bottom), and White nations are still pillaging Africa (and most of our neighborhoods in urban America) for their own gain.

I’m still giddy over the fact that we’ll finally see a Black man with a Black woman love interest. They barely cast Will Smith or Idris Elba with us anymore so that alone is huge. All the women look great. There is no revolution on Earth without Black women on the frontlines.

Blade is an underrated example of our influence being particularly strong and our cultural impact (we move the culture y’all!) being undeniable, despite being downplayed. And I’m hoping that Black Panther is able to build on its spiritual predecessor’s work come February 2018.

Thanks for showing Blade homage because folks really do forget the wave Blade started. It’s weird though, as if Blade would have done so much better during this era, where Black people can finally move freely with our love for the world of geekdom that didn’t exist in 1998.

Now......as much as I know Black Panther is going to be lit, it feels like Marvel is throwing out a personal Black folks challenge by releasing it in February.

They must not know we are so committed to this movie, we will act half Eskimo if need be to show up and SHOW OUT.

People always act like the X-men saved comic book movies, talking like Blade didn’t do all the heavy lifting first.

      Facts. Blade made X-Men possible.

People swear the cartoon made it possible, but nah without Blade, there would have been no live action representation of Marvel Heroes to follow since the last Marvel movie was the Punisher from the 80s.

Thank you so much for this article. I’m loosing my voice trying to explain to people specifically why Black Panther is so important and also why I will not be available for the entirety of opening day. White people, don’t call me, or any other Wakandan-american you might know unless you’re ready for Holiness church-level hollering.
