Overturned convictions like this is why I’ve come to oppose the death penalty. It’s only a matter of time before an innocent man is put to death or discover that it’s happened afterwards.

A matter of time? Literally been going on for over a century and most likely longer.

Hasn’t worked in 46 years. Has been wrongly convicted and stripped of his personhood and the ability to have a meaningful, free life.

But we’d still like to wring that $2000 from the shell we’re releasing.

    Justice.

It’s bail, not a fine. He gets the money back if the charges are dropped or he appears at trial.

The Louisiana “justice” system is one of the most corrupt in the United States. They only released this man because they do not want to pay for his healthcare since he is growing old and in failing health.

A life completely taken from an innocent man by our “justice” system. Nothing upsets me more than shit like this.

I recognize that there’s a chance to convict an innocent person because of circumstantial evidence, and especially with misidentification - what is truly f’d about this is there was evidence it -wasn’t- him and they hid it and still proceeded.

The ‘turn over all info’ guy is going to work his way up from a sea cucumber in his next life.

They better collect interest on that $2000 because they are going need every penny if he gets the financial justice he deserves.

So why the bail? Isn’t that generally for someone awaiting trial?

Unless and until the LA Supreme Court affirms the dismissal of his conviction and the state moves to dismiss the underlying charge, he is technically still facing trial. He has gone from being convicted back to being indicted and arraigned but with no conviction.

State District Judge Richard Anderson ruled that the decades-old case against Jones was “weak, at best” and determined that authorities at the time withheld evidence that could have exonerated Jones decades ago. NBC News reports that Jones showed no visible reaction in the courtroom when the judge announced his freedom and the $2,000 bail.

you think after 45 years he gives a fuck?

the fucks he gonna do now?

dudes basically still gonna be in prison.. just without the free food... no ones gonna employ his old ass.

least you could do is bankroll him for the rest of his days after 45 years of wrongfull imprisonment miss justice

Anyone know if anyone has started some kind of crowdfunding? I know that’s an annoying solution posed for everything that happens to anyone anymore, and hopefully this guy will get a huge payout from the wrongful conviction, but seems like a good person to help cover that $2,000 bail and then some. I mean I don’t think we can count on the state to do the right thing here.

Just FYI, after asking about a crowdfunding account myself, and then seeing many others ask the same question, I started a GoFundMe for Wilbert this morning.

I’ve never dealt with a crowdfunding campaign before besides donating to them, but GoFundMe immediately put the page under review saying that it may violate terms of service if it is raising money for legal fees. I hope they don’t view it that way and allow it to go forward, but I’ll have to wait until they contact me with their decision.

I’ll post back here to update about whatever happens and hopefully share a link. If someone else has success setting anything up for Wilbert or sees anything online, please post back here so those who want to help can.

Rape is a terrible crime, but folks are getting life in prison for it? Holy shit. There are some unbelievable sentencing disparities in this country. Then to be exonerated and they still want your bail from 40 years ago? Fuck that.
