Are you being serious? Because you should.

Even though I don’t trust it, and it sounds like a setup.

I want to rip this idea a new asshole, but it’s kinda sorta intriguing. You can’t even begin to assume some of the logistics of it all, or if anyone on either side would even show up, but I can understand why she would want to organize something like this.

However, does she seriously need white validation that bad? To bring your point out some Breanna, are they going to have a “touch our hair booth?” Is she putting this on with any white folks. What are they going to eat, cause, uh, them whites have particular taste. What about after the event ends. Do we crawl back into our corners until the next round? Will it be hot that day. Heat is known to create hostile environments, and I mean, c’mon. I can’t imagine a more hostile environment than this one?

    God so many questions.

But it’s not just one person, it’s a group of people. Something tells me that a group of successful, independent Black media creatives based in Atlanta aren’t doing this because they crave white validation. It’s totally normal to be skeptical of this, but some people like to do the work of building bridges. No one put them up to it. No one told them they had to. So far as anyone knows, independent agents with full powers of discernment and decision made a conscious choice to try and connect two groups of people that struggle - because we live in a white supremacist society - to meet on equal ground. I don’t think this event is going to change the world, but if these people are making an effort to bring other people, different people, together on a human-to-human level, then I think they ought to be lauded for it.

Might not mean shit. Might be a failure. Might not change the perspective of a single person. But if we’re being honest, and we know that - based on the original article that this one quotes - Blacks have friend circles that are 83% Black and whites have friend circles that are 91% white, there isn’t a lot of hope for empathy and the development of meaningful interpersonal connections. Now, the REASON things are this way is because of white people and white power structures. Nothing will change the fact that this is how we got here. But to a certain extent, if it’s ever going to change, it’s got to start with white people listening to Black folks. And typically, friendships are based on listening and mutual respect. If this makes a change in the lives of even a handful of hitherto ignorant and isolated white folks that’s still something, right? I mean it doesn’t make the world worse. And given that most shit I read about from all over the world objectively DOES make the world worse, maybe this isn’t so bad.

That was essentially the point of my first paragraph. The second was more facetious. I’m all for bridging gaps. Healing communities etc, but, well, I don’t know. If this works fine. If it doesn’t that’s fine too. At least it will be a fun day for whoever shows up.

Pass. Sounds like a set up by the police to trap unsuspecting black folks on outstanding warrants.

We are not entertainment. We are not props. And this is certainly not the kind of side show I would want to be a part of. But there are far better, more patient people than me.

This is the strange vibe I got. Like some kind of fucked up petting zoo or something...

    Yeah, but still, why?

I kinda get why. It’s sort of a kumbya thing and that’s ok, whatever. But the thing is, the white people that show up, in that part of the country, are going to want them to explain everything about black people and be the representatives for every black person. Now, maybe that’s what the organizers want and, if so, that’s a fool’s errand. But if they don’t think they’re going to be asked to account for everything that every other black person does, well... I just hope they film this. But since they specifically include filmmakers in their list, I guess someone will.

I grew up in Atlanta and assure you that unless you are in a far suburb, whites and blacks interact routinely. And blacks are far from some exotic mystery. I’ve heard more vile racial shit in Boston and NYC than Atlanta.

You don’t really think the fact they “interact routinely” means white people won’t ask them to defend/explain the entire black race do you? You can go to school with white people, work with them, live in the same building and they’ll still seek you out for your opinion on Kaepernick and ask you to explain him, as if they couldn’t possibly figure it out for themselves.

I hope they don’t think this in an open call for “black friendship” cuz naw and I hope the organizers make it clear one doesn’t speak for all.

I wrote the same thing earlier. I can easily see one person being asked to defend Black Lives Matter, Colin Kaepernick and Barack “Hussein” Obama all in one sentence.

‘The highlight of the party seems to be a “cultural” scavenger hunt that will help the uninitiated white person become more familiar with and learn about the black community.’

So, “uninitiated” white people will go from booth to booth getting their scavenger hunt cards stamped?

“Ooh! A lady with dreadlocks! I need one of those! Ok. Now, what’s left?”

“We’ve got a man with an ‘Omega brand.’”

’’I don’t know what that is. Skip it. What else?”

“Guy with a bow tie.” [throws power fist]

“Ehhhh.... “[scans room] “Don’t see one. There’s a guy wearing a hat.”

    “Not on the list.”

    “NSBE lapel pin?”

    “Huh?”

“Skip it ! Urban League bumper sticker?”

    “Got one.”
    “Cool. Autographed Raven Simone headshot?”

“THERE’S HER BOOTH!!!! Quick, get in line!”

I mean...it’s audacious as hell, but recent years have shown me how fucking little people know and/or are exposed to. It isn’t much of a leap to think that there are people out there who wouldn’t otherwise meet or encounter a black person (waves toward Coos County, NH).

    That said...
