Why can’t white people just LIKE some shit? Why do they have to invent a word and pretend to be an ethnicity or race they are not?

You like Filipino food and you like the culture and the music and the people. That’s FINE, white people. That just means you are a human being capable of liking different shit. Why, OH WHY, do you have to actually BECOME that race?

Just be a white person who appreciates other cultures. For fuck’s sake, we need more of that. A lot more.

They’re cultural vampires. What’s easiest, drawing from a rich and storied history to make the culture of your ancestors include a little bit of yourself so that you can pass it along to your progeny, or just taking a poor facsimile of things you find interesting, patching them together like a low-rent Frankenstein’s monster, and then claiming all the credit? They can’t appreciate other cultures because their only culture is one of subjugation, thievery, and perversion. You can’t appreciate something if you covet it.

Honestly, speaking as a European Mutt myself, I think a lot of it is rooted in a general awkwardness regarding “White Culture”. There’s just not much of a real cultural identity in there that doesn’t get tinted with a fuckton of racism.

      Yeah, I know. Irony’s a bitch.

When you’re surrounded by people talking about and celebrating their racial and cultural identity, it can feel like your missing out on something big, especially if you’re generally unclear about what parts of Europe your ancestry’s from.

And yeah, I know. World’s tiniest violin for the white people.

But it is just this general issue. I view myself as Californian, immersing myself in the interesting ways the cultures blend and mix into something unique (Korean-Mexican fusion is sooooo good)... but it’s still pretty easy to feel like you’re missing out on something.

Granted, this woman’s taking those issues and cranking the dial up to 11 and throwing in a shitton of other issues on top, most likely, but I kinda recognize at least a corner of the situation.

““I’d watch the History Channel sometimes for hours you know whenever it came to that and you know nothing else intrigued me more but things about Filipino culture,” Ja Du continued.”

    This is transparent bullshit.

The History Channel simply wouldn’t show enough about Filipino culture for this to happen. That’s not what they do. They show dumb shit like Pawn Stars.

There’s simply no way to watch the History Channel “for hours” and get a massive dose of Filipino culture.

Okay, good, so u wasn’t the only one thinking that. I was like “what History Channel is she watching that she’s seeing hours of Filipino culture?” I can’t even see hours of American history on the History Channel.

At best, you’d get about two seconds worth of grainy footage depicting Filipino peasants fleeing the Imperial Japanese Army, sandwiched between Ancient Aliens and Hitler.

I see the “transracial” but I don’t see the “transgender”, as the source article describes this person as a man. Am I missing something?

Yes, I almost missed it too because it’s buried in the article. The description is actually a bit cringeworthy, but this is the same TV station that found a psychologist to say being “transracial” and converting to a new religion is the same thing so.....

The History Channel is such garbage even if I was inclined to by sympathetic that’d tilt me against it. That’s not a viable method to interact with a culture. It’s reductive by design. They can’t even get “white” cultures down right, so there’s essentially zero chance they’ll do better elsewhere.

On one hand I sort of understand the root impulse. I’ve met a few people of color who were pagans and followed a Norse or Celtic path. But there’s some serious differences there. First, that’s religion, and reconstructionist oriented groups have orthopraxic elements. Your identity doesn’t matter, your actions do. Even historically you could see people of other “races” essentially adopt the culture and be accepted. I’m firmly in the anti-folkish camp and I think that sort of engagement is healthy.

But that’s all without the power dynamics here and there’s no attempt to claim “oh I’m X race”. In a sense there’s performative identities, where your actions make you part of the group but this person isn’t really engaging in that, and they’ve claimed an identity that’s not performative and that’s not a choice for others. You can’t choose to become “white”. The action is only one way, and that’s harmful.

I have yet to meet the folkish or Odinist aficionado that wasn’t sort of racist. I may have just met the 3 suspect ones though...

But yeah, the History channel has best at making Hitler documentaries for the last several years, and you can’t convert to an ethnicity or the shared formative experiences that are unique to a culture and location.

Yeah I mean at this point despite folkish groups trying to say it’s about heritage everyone knows they’re just racist and lean towards racism. Unfortunately there’s still a number of Facebook groups and unreliable sites fueling that stuff. Then we get the other side, which is eclectic usually Wiccanate pagans who culturally appropriate as easily as breathing. They have a nasty habit of declaring all hard polytheists and recon pagans to be problematic.

Ancient Aliens killed it for me. Seeing some idiot misinterpret a well known example of Amarna period Egyptian art. Plus all their “northern barbarians” stuff has really contributed to the myth of the Dark Ages and that nonsense. There’s a reason most of their experts are some random professor from some tiny college.
