      There has been a not-insignificant number of African-American serial killers since the late 1960s, but the weirdest might be William Henry Hance, who killed four women and tried to misdirect police by claiming to be a vigilante group of white men, targeting black women in revenge against ANOTHER killer who was killing white women.

    Police say they caught Petgrave after a woman called in a tip, saying that she recognized Petgrave from surveillance footage. Rose Jackson told authorities she recognized Petgrave from a feeding program where she worked.

    Kudos to you calling it in but, ooh Rose, baby, don’t they have Silent Witness around your way?

    It’s a numbers game. The things that produce serial/spree killers are equally present in all races. The thing is, there are more white people, so there will be more white serial killers. Also, because most crimes are intra-racial and non-white victims receive less attention, non-white killers can get away with it longer.

    There’s also the issue of these killers targeting “non-persons” like runaways, prostitutes, homeless people, etc. Those people will get no attention, but a young doctor who’s the victim of this violence will receive a LOT of attention.

    This isn’t new, it’s just not advertised that law enforcement and media don’t care about some people and criminals will take advantage of that

      oh it’s a ‘numbers game’ but in a completely different way to the way you think. Black people are less likely to attain ‘serial’ status because they are not protected by privilege in the same way white male killers are. White men are the face of serial murder because they are supported by society to kill over and over. From a society that will give them a free pass on the warning signs of a developing pathology - such as domestic abuse, sexual assaults, petty theft etc (cos boys are just being boys) to the police and judiciary who see themselves reflected in their suspects and think ‘he seems so normal, just like me, he can’t have done anything’ (that’s how Sutcliffe escaped capture for so long) a white guy will have the opportunity and the means to kill for long after his black cohort showing the same behaviours and early signs has been locked up for life for HIS string of petty crimes and assaults.

      There will be exceptions. There are always exceptions! But it’s not the murder that’s the key - anyone can kill - it’s society that supports them to kill over and over. Society overwhelmingly supports white men in their ambitions.

      I think we’re both right. The increased numbers based on population, plus the decreased societal oversight leads to the ability of white serial killers to go undetected for long stretches of time. Dennis Rader made it several decades while Richard Ramirez made it just over a year.

    The Miami New Times reports that Petgrave offered a motive, however, which was to kill at least five people.

    Thats... not really a motive. That’s a goal.
