Of all the people in the world to pretend to be, you pretend to be the creator of a fan mod.

I mean, sure, I understand that things in everyone’s lives may not be great and they like to live vicariously through other people and so on and so forth, but a fan modder? Really?

I mean, likely suffering from some kind of mental illness. That sort of compulsively kept lie indicates a level of OCD and instability. Not to mention leaving her car when she left? Thats not something a mentally well person does. She likely read most of Magus’s old posts and content after the initially lie and became obsessed with keeping it. Possibly even had a source who would never admit it after the fact.

By impersonating someone that was famous in certain circles but recluse enough to only be properly known by a handful of people she improved her life and was accepted into a community. Mostly the fact that it was easy to accomplish and profit from. Had it been someone equally reclusive but more famous, such as DOTA2's Icefrog, she’d have to provide proper proof.

“She’d also advertise other cool mods she was editing, they said, like a Zelda skin that envisioned the princess covered in blood from head to toe.”

Excuse me but what the fuck?

This was a weird, but very interesting story. Thanks for the journalism, Cecilia! Stuff like this takes more effort than the “new game announced!” articles, but these kinds of articles are probably the main reason I check Kotaku so often. Thanks for the hard work! =)

Man, people are really upping the ante on these fake personas/stories/etc.

Back in my day, kids just pretended that they had an uncle that worked for Nintendo.

Yeah I’m a little lost there. They’re like ‘Years’ and then it’s like ‘Three months after she moved in, kaboom!’. o.o

It first came up in 2014 supposedly, but it wasn’t happening for years. Just months.

Also everyone involved in this process is not the brightest if they just let someone sneak in like that.

You know one of those “one or two people” who could “get ahold” of Magus was Magus, right? That or he had magical abilities to know when he was talked about or his input was needed, but it’s probably the other option.

I’m just trying to decipher if any of these pictures have “Katy” in it.

The article didn’t help me know who the real Magus is either :P

The real dude doesn’t sound like he’s a recluse though. Props to him for having a laugh about it… the situation could’ve been really worse if this Katy person decided to screw up his reputation in real life.

I can assure you that none of these photos have “Katy” in them. Or Magus himself, for that matter.

The article suggests that the guy in flannel in the team photo is Magus unless I’m reading it wrong/another picture is be referenced.
