I’m sure Meldonium Sharapova is already trying to brand herself as the white answer to Sloane Stephens for more endorsement money.

I’m going to guess Kevin Plank is happy he both stuck with Sloane as an endorsing athlete and took the stance he did.

Good payoff for him, especially since Andy Murray got hurt and took himself out of the draw.

Kudos to Sloane Stephens! Strategically she played it perfectly and pulled off some tougher shots when she needed to. She actually has a lot more weapons that she can draw from and we saw a little bit of everything. The biggest thing that has improved with her is the ability to tough out matches when things are not going her way.

Madison Keys just didn’t handle the occasion at all and she melted in the end.

Serena and Venus are a national treasure (that we don’t really deserve but save that for another day) so hopefully this new generation can keep the ball rolling. Hopefully Francis Tiafoe on the men’s side will keep improving as well

Sloane was very focused. Congrats to her!

Excuse me for noticing - can’t remember the last time I saw a Black woman win a major nationally televised tennis tournament then run into the stands to embrace a Black man. That’s huge, but who is he? What a bonus if she’s dating a black man.

You don’t remember any of the times Venus and Serena went into the stands and hugged their father? Ooooook.

Anyway, I’m pretty sure that’s her coach. She’s gone through more than a few of them so I couldn’t tell you who he is exactly. He’s done an amazing job, though.

Sloane is currently dating USMNT “star” Jozy Altidore, and yes, he’s black. But if that matters so much to you she has dated a white man before. I hope that doesn’t diminish the bonus you gave her. 🙄

In contrast to the men’s side where old is new again, the women have had two brand new slam champions this year (Stephens and Ostapenko), one two-time champ (Muguruza), and one GOAT in Serena. That’s incredible. I love women’s tennis, and women’s sports in general.

Sloane deserved this. You can only play the person across the net from you, and she did that with some of the best tennis I’ve ever seen her play. She’ll be ranked 15th in the WTA with this win (I think that’s what they said, or at least I hope that’s what they said—she’s definitely a top 30 player). Congrats Sloane!

I can’t wait to see how Stephens and Keys follow this up.

I am trying to remember if Sloane was the tennis player that was “fat-shamed” by a sports writer, years ago. If so... *purses lips and folds arms* Mmmm. That’s the thing that I’ve never understood about the “tennis purists” or avid fans of the game: Can they at least try to hide their prejudices and bigotry? Talk shit about the size of a black woman’s thighs and arms, meanwhile, she’s kicking ass on the tennis field and she has the endurance, thanks to those big arms and big thighs.

You might be thinking of Taylor Townsend?

I don’t think Sloane has gotten those criticisms, but I wouldn’t be surprised if she has. The rail thin European look is the standard in women’s tennis. Buck that trend and people think a player is either overweight or on PEDs.

Sloane’s always been fit and her arms are enviable.

    Congrats Sloane!

This was an odd match for me to watch because I didn’t have a favorite to root for, and it felt like the crowd didn’t know who to root for (until Madison was down in the 2nd set), so everything was kinda sedate.

Looking forward to seeing more of both of these women.

Did anyone else notice that the man “won” the U.S. Open?

Not that he won the mens’ singles, but that he won the U.S. Open?

    Hmmmmm....

Those who have been following the awkward coverage of her relationship with US soccer star Jozy Altidore might find this amusing:

    Hey Maria,

Watch Madison Keys. That’s how you lose with class and dignity. Try it some time.
