      Yes, I tried to evacuate before Rita, and couldn’t because the highway was just a massive parking lot. I wound up staying with a friend, still in town but slightly further from the coast. I hope Florida evacuees aren’t trapped on the road in traffic when Irma hits them.

    One of my relatives is an aging Baby Boomer hippie, and even though she’s lived in Florida for years, she grossly miscalculated her ability to get a hotel room within a distance she can drive. (Basically, she should have booked, you know, right away instead of waiting.) So right now, she’s going to hunker down with a friend in an inland building that came through Andrew pretty unscathed and hope for the best.

    One of her dippy-ass friends - who appears to bill out insane money as a psychic - posted on my relative’s FB page that she shouldn’t worry, because Florida wasn’t going to be impacted by Irma in the slightest, except for some light rain and “fantastic sunsets.” She encouraged my family member to just walk around and commune with the trees, because the trees weren’t afraid. (I cannot make this shit up.) (Three guesses on whether or not she’s white and only the first one counts.) I replied to her with the NWS page on Irma and some news reports coming out of the islands. Because what the everloving fuck, bitch?

    This woman appears to live on the beach. I think she’s gonna get washed out to sea. And I never thought I’d say it, but my hippie relative is being the more sensible person here.

    Just came back to New Orleans (on Monday) after being at Universal Studios Orlando, this is scary for all of us Southern states. Plans are to head North and I urge EVERYONE to not try and wait it out. This is not Katrina, this in not Matthew or Isaac, this is something much worse! Please have a plan in place!
