So Freedom of Speech only counts when you like what it says? I think Trump is an orange turd, but people still have the right to support him. Obviously, true hate speech and symbols like the Swastika should he banned. But not this.

“Make America Great Again” is a racist agenda. If you are wearing something with that slogan, you are endorsing racist beliefs and policies.

the teacher explained that the T-shirts were inappropriate, not necessarily because they support Trump but because the slogan has essentially been taken over by “the neo-Nazis.”

Where’s the lie tho? Don’t they pay them to teach the truth?

Nope. They are in general payed to teach within approved material in an approved manner and most importantly not to generate to much of a headache for the administration. At least the public schools I attended and knew of didn’t try to claim anything about encouraging teachers to teach outside of their mandated box (other schools could be different for all I know).

Hands up (don’t shoot *sigh*) if you think that “school administrator” (in quotes because the ones I know are all real ones, unlike this phony) voted for Trump.

And before any FREEZE PEACH screamers start trying to do that thing in comments, best to flip through the free speech limitations right quick (unless of course, you *enjoy* looking kind of silly in public ).

Oh - you didn’t know there were any ..?

Exactly. Free speech does have limitations, assholes. I couldn’t wear shirts endorsing alcohol and drug use to school.

I thought pretty much all schools had moved to a system where you couldn’t wear certain colors, images or messages that might “disrupt” class. A Trump shirt is one of the most disruptive things I can think of right now.

Wild guess: those kids don’t exactly value their education and were more than happy to miss class.

I hate Trump. Seriously, screw that guy. I hope we get the chance to see aaaaaaaaall his many chickens come home to roost in the most public way.

That said, unless the school has specific policies about political statements I don’t think they could have backed up the teacher on this. If it’s a private school they can do just about anything the board members will let them. If it’s a public school, though, they have to be much more careful about stuff like this. Yes, MAGA is now a neo-nazi slogan and carries with it all sorts of hateful connotations, but on the surface it’s just a campaign slogan and would be easily defended as such in court.

I have to support erring on the side of freedom, otherwise it creates a precedent where everything that can be remotely tied to violence or hatred of any kind could be banned. If something proves a distraction or creates other problems, address it by creating policies at the district level. If it’s just that we hate what it stands for (and rightly so) we have to be VERY careful.

Damn. The school district is right, alas, even though my sympathies are with the teacher.

Bummer that the teacher’s subject is math. It could have been a fascinating discussion in a history or political science or civics course. (Do civics courses still exist?)
