Ooooh! I didn’t know that The Mayor was exec produced by Diggs. I was gonna give it a try anyway because Yvette Nicole Brown will always have my heart.

I have little love left for Empire, but I decided long ago that I’m in it until the end.

And may I suggest a weekly open thread for Queen Sugar because that show always gets me in my feels because what are you doing with yourself, Ralph Angel?!

RA always making the wrong choice, he’s getting better though. I’m rooting for him though. Hopefully Charley will find her humble.

Uh how about The Flash? They have three strong black leads, Jesse L. Martin, Candice Patton & Keiynan Lonsdale. They are strong, intelligent & vital to the show.

This show is a masterclass in how diversity in television should work.

Thank you. Strong black male lead that doesn’t chew up scenery & plays an important role in the main character’s development. A strong intelligent independent female lead that can carry a storyline & a young black male that blends in & has been featured as an important part of the story arc. Shows on the CW should be viewed by others as how to have a diverse cast with strong black & female leads. Arrow, The Vampire Diaries & I Zombie. If you go back to the original WB you had Buffy The Vampire Slayer & It’s spinoff Angel which had a wonderful diverse cast.

You certainly described it well enough for me to take a peek! I’m not big at all on American tv programs.

    Welcome to The Root, Tonja.

Say what you will about “Scandal” but the music supervisor for this show has always come through with a song to match the tone of the scene.

Didn’t Black Lightning call Aquaman White Fish? Wait, that was Black Vulcan.

Didn’t they only call him “Black Vulcan” because they didn’t want to pay the licensing for “Black Lightning”?

Only because I’m an oldster from the 70s do I know that Black Vulcan was actually the name of the guy on the Superfriends cartoon (you can see Apache Chief in the video clip)

Susan Kelechi Watson is one of the best actresses you’ve never think about but when you see her you’re like “oh, she’s cool”.

As Beth Pearson on This Is Us, she is low key killing it in every second she’s on screen, the best moment was when she and Randall’s dad, William (Sob! Cry!) were taking hits on his medicinal weed, he revealed a MAJOR plot twist about Ran. Beth, in the midst of a feeling no pain high, heard it and snapped right into “Nobody Messes With My Man” mode, so smooth. I love how she loves Randall and how chill she is about protecting her family from the bullshit.

She is also great on Louie as his ex, who is very white (the only person who can see she’s actually black is Louie’s homie/sometimes lover/mostly friend, Pamela).

I was in NYC last week and saw ads for The Mayor all over the place.

    Illustration for article titled

Not terribly convincing. I watched 3 seasons of Glee, I’ve enough exposure to Lea Michele to last a lifetime.

Plus, one of the executive producers is the ever-so-talented Daveed Diggs.

    DVR is set.

I’m looking forward to Black Lightning and, hopefully, his daughters will become Thunder and Lightning, right away and there’s no dumb, slow build up to it.

I recall Thunder in THe Outsiders series, but only vaguely aware of Lightning. Where does she show up?

Lightning was featured in some issues of the JSA book. They both appeared in Cartoon Network shorts a while back

Thanks for this... why are so many on TUESDAY NIGHTS? Ugh! For watching purposes AND I have class that night, lol.

Anyway, I’m in. I REALLY hope Black Lightning precedes Supernatural because that’s the only show on the CW I’ve been able to tolerate lately.
