It continues to boggles my mind that the lesson (white) Democrats learned from Trump’s election seems to be “we need to appeal more to the same racist people who voted for an open and obvious racist, and stop focusing on the identity politics that Trump used to ride a wave of white resentment to the Oval Office.”

This shit ain’t hard, man. Barack Obama provided a template to win the White House, handily, TWICE. If you get people of color to turn out to vote, the Democrats win. You get people of color to turn out by relating the larger issues the country faces to the struggles marginalized communities face every day.

Obama didn’t say it was time to get universal healthcare just because other countries have it and we should too because “???”. He relayed a personal story of watching his own cancer stricken mother deal with insurance companies. He advocated for a public option, but he never shied away from mentioning 1 in 5 African Americans didn’t have insurance or were under insured.

The candidate that manages to beat Trump isn’t going to shy away from the fact that he’s a racist, sexist, homophobic, transphobic bag of used condoms. How the fuck can you beat Donald Trump without mentioning ANY of that? Hillary tried to beat him on his temperament and people thought that was just fine.

It’s infuriating to no end that after running the most openly racist campaign in history, his continued hiring of racist people, his open support of white supremacists, and the steps he’s taken to undermine people of color... we’re being told that the Democrats want to ignore that. And then if/when (probably when) Trump is reelected, they’ll turn around and blame black people for not showing up to the polls.

Kamala Harris and Cory Booker are in these streets talking about criminal justice reform and Trump’s racism and white liberals are gonna hate it when they start taking votes from whatever anointed white savior they’ve chosen.

    And fuck Bernie forever.

I have a feeling that most of the nation cares more about general job and manufacturing growth than they do about correcting racist practices.

I can’t stand Trump. And yet I recently heard a report that manufacturing is at ano all time high in many years. Unemployment is low. That is a big reason many held their nose to vote for him and why others love him: jobs drying up in manufacturing. (Also, of course... they love his white nationalism.)

It concerns me because I do not want another 4 years of this man, but he is giving the people what he mentioned: some amout of manufacturing growth. I don’t want his other promise, fire and fury... And his co-signing and promotion of white nationalism makes me want to vomit.

I assure you that no one who voted for Hair Hitler held their nose. Despite being a spoiled draft-dodging billionaire from NYC, who has repeatedly squandered his inherited fortune on failed businesses, cheats and swindles people out of money, married a porn star, cheated on several wives, and even had a child out of wedlock (gasp!), he sure knows how to tickle the Y’all Qaida g-spot. They seem to think that the Orange Menace represents the “common man”; only thing they actually have in common is conveniently their most cherished and deeply-held value—white supremacy.

Democratic women need to give tue middle finger to the “let’s not offend the racists” contingent of their party and keep pushing forward. Elizabeth Warren and Maxine Waters are a little old but Kamala Harris could bring the party back to where it was in 2008. And Bernie can go to blazes. Don’t care how many butt-hurt Bernie Bros I offend, I will say it again. Forget Bernie. Not a single white male he has endorsed in a special election since 2016 has won. Not one. Bernie ain’t ish. Never was.

Bernie is the poster boy for white, liberal mediocrity. He’s never passed significant legislation, he pisses on his colleagues at every opportunity, he rails against rich people while owning three houses, he advocates free education after his wife bankrupted a small town college and walked away with a nice golden parachute...and he’ll never, ever lose his job, because he comes from a state with a white constituency, despite doing jack shit.

Fuck Bernie Sanders, then, now and forever.

Elizabeth Warren would be perfect, just perfect. She subscribes to the same policy positions as Bernie but with a more palatable delivery. And Michael and the anti-Bernie contingent can still rally against Bernie every week because he’ll still be a Senator. It’s a win-win for everyone!

I voted for Kamala and would love her to run in the future, but she’s just getting her feet wet in the Senate. However, if she decides to run I won’t be disappointed as her trajectory in the Senate has been positive.

White democrats and foot shooting go hand in hand. That liberal white supremacy all these old assholes won’t admit to runs strong in Dem circles from the local level right to the top.

This is the real issue. As long as the Democratic party has to be concerned about the “What’s that suspicious, large, hooded black man doing running around my neighborhood? Better call the police” and the “Well, yes he was unarmed but we don’t have all the facts yet. We have to be patient” varieties of white people this is predictable.

The white dems who run our county board just voted to approve a jail expansion for our Trump and Sessions visiting Sheriff - in contravention of the state platform, their party leadership, and community engagement.

They don’t give a fuck about brown or black lives and are not afraid to show it - and until there are consequences in the form of withdrawal of party election support, they’ll keep right on being wolves in sheep’s clothing.

Democrats need stop being scared in general. Stop saying you’re ‘going to save or fix Obamacare,’ and demand single payer healthcare for everyone. Stop saying ‘it’s up to the states,’ and make marijuana legal nationwide. Stop saying ‘there are a few bad apples,’ and start saying the entire justice system needs an overhaul.

And for god’s sake stop trying to win over republicans. They’re not coming over because you promise them not to take down some statues.

They have to do all that, and they have to do it in away that explains HOW they’re going to do it.

Hillary and Bernie both spent so much time attacking each other’s ideas, that they never came to the American people (and people of color especially) and explained how they were going to implement their plans.

I keep going back to Barack Obama, because his two campaigns were master classes in combining hopeful rhetoric and catchphrases with actual discussion of policy and how the hell he’d manage to actuallly implement the change he talked about.

If you’re gonna come to people of color for votes, you’re gonna have to show your work if you want to work your way around our collective eye rolling at anyone promising us they can pass notoriously hard to pass legislation.

Hillary did explain, over and over and in great detail, what her policies were and how she planned to implement them. You have no idea what they were partly because of the way the media treated Trump like some outrageously crazy uncle, and her like a corrupt criminal.

They are useless and ineffective and it doesn’t behoove them to change their milquetoast approach to things. Their inability to call things as they are because they’re afraid of scaring off the centrist dems and the “moderate” republicans they want to bring over is what will ultimately lead to continual losses and more of the same bullshit.

But Keith Ellison shouldn’t have been the DNC chair, of course. And the “we’re not Trump” battle cry is the best way to convince people of a position, naturally.

Clowns. Afraid to take an actual stance on something. They wouldn’t split the party so much if they’d actually take progressive stances. I’d be willing to bet those 3rd party voters who used to/usually vote D would consider coming back if they pushed for a comprehensive progressive platform, but nah, let’s keep aiming for those GOP voters who begrudgingly voted R in 2016 because of party loyalty.

Albert Burneko over on Deadspin was right, everything is awful.

America hates experienced politicians. America votes almost entirely based on personality.

Clinton was one of the most experienced candidates ever. Americans have hated Clinton’s personality for a couple of decades.

I honestly thought the only reason Clinton had a chance was because she was running against Trump. Oops.

    “(...) risks dividing the electorate.”

Seriously. Stop the bullshit. The electorate is already divided. Those scared white racists you don’t want to risk offending? You’re not getting their votes no matter what you do. So stop courting to and coddling them and focus on doing what is right and good and you might, just might, pick up the minority and otherwise disadvantaged vote.

And why is any candidate still listening to the “strategists” who handed the presidency and both houses of congress to Hair Fuehrer and his merry band of bigots and thieves?

Go talk to your constituency. Or, more importantly, go listen to them.

Anyone seen Joy Reid’s interview on the Daily Show? She nailed it when she said that the Democrats need to quit lamenting the loss of the “White working class” that they used to represent 40+ years ago and get the fuck over it, those people are Republicans now. It’s time to move on to defining their values and being willing to stand up for them, and the unsexy business of registering people to vote.

Hey, man—if the Democrats had no shot and voting didn’t make a damn difference, why would the Republicans work so hard at voter suppression and redistricting, especially targeting POC?

A lesson for wishy washy Democrats, nazis are evil. The confederacy defended slavery and an armed insurrection against the United States. It and the symbols of it that still haunt us are evil.

    There is no controversy here.

It shocks me how right wing the USA is. As a Canadian and a “Centre-Left” voter. I’d say your Democrat party would fit centre-right on our scale. It shocks me that you don’t have a proper left wing party (and I don’t even mean a communist one).
