Why would you want to curb binging. It’s literally what makes Netflix. Your direct competitor. Fucking Amazon.

I will say this, Amazon released “The Grand Tour” week to week and it made it so much easier to talk to folks about it, and it kept the hype up. Then again that didn’t have a overarching storyline.

I’m not 100% on this, but I think later GT episodes were still in production as the first ones aired.

The pilot piqued my interest. That interest all but died after waiting a year for the second episode. I enjoyed the new episodes, but 5 episodes didn’t really leave me feeling invested in anything. I’m not sure I’ll have a shit left to give when they get around to releasing the rest of it.

Agreed. I also thought there was a drop in quality from the pilot to the rest of the series. Not as funny, not as interesting, so I’m not as invested.

I watched the first two episodes of The Tivk and loved it. I’ve held off watching more than one or two a day so it will sink in better. I also loved The HandMaids Tale on Hulu and felt that it was not a good show to binge watch. Each episode was too emotional.

So I think returning to some shows being released weekly might be a good thing. I could even see the systems eventually preventing you from binge watching some shows.

Or they could release it all at once for those who prefer binge watching and let those who don’t watch at their own pace. Like you’re already doing.

Or they could release it weekly so that everyone who wants to discuss it per episode can while the people who want to binge it on their own can wait for the whole series to be out. You know, episodic releases. Since it’s episodic. Because it’s a television series.

Eh, this is the kind of thing you do when you don’t have confidence in your show.

Can’t blame them, I’m 4 episodes in and it’s…got its good points and bad, but I think it mostly falls flat. The pilot was fun, but this is the 4th-best version of The Tick.

I almost never binge series, usually restricting myself to one or two episodes a night. (The only time I ever power-binged my way through a show was the first season of The Fall, and that was because there was an ice storm going on at the time and I figured I’d might as well see how it ended in case the power went out before dawn.)

That said, it just seems silly to try to create an artificial shortage by rationing out a series. Maybe it creates a groundswell of interest and you have the fans plus lots of new viewers checking back in when the rest of the episodes drop. But it’s more likely that by that point, hardly anyone will care. This attempt to stir up interest by keeping people from finishing the show seems pretty retrograde to me.

I like to binge watch. Watching a bit of TV is my way of relaxing after work, second work, housework and looking after child. I will watch a weekly show, but I have zero interest in rushing to watch the Tick when the second half comes out. I will be busy watching something else then and might get to the Tick when my other interests have died down.
Give me a full series - Patriot, Startup, Defenders, Daredevil and so on, and I will watch them straight away and if I like them, will watch them again. Give it me weekly, I will make time to watch it if I like it. Do it like this... I will watch the first half and if it is the greatest thing ever! I shall watch the second half when it comes out. Most likely, as in this case, it will be an okay show and not one I will stop watching other shows for.

I think there’s definitely something to be said for doing it this way. We get a nice big chunk of story, we get to process that, then another chunk in just a few months (instead of a year or so). It’s a nice balance between waiting a week between eps and then months for the new season (like network television shows) and getting the entire season at one time and then having to wait that much longer for the next (like Netflix).

I think one of my favorite moments is in the second episode when he comments on the Tick’s new costume and he just “Thanks!”. Obviously they changed the costume between the episodes. The creators turning it into a /shrug joke kept me watching.

All in all, the first 6 episodes were great and I want more. Sucks that I have to wait just because someone decides it is better for me.

Then why not just release one episode per week then. Splitting seasons is stupid

I feel like this is a situation where either extreme is fine, but the compromise between them is terrible.

Dropping a whole season at once is great. I get to suck it all in and experience the full arc without interruption. I get to the last episodes when my memories of the first are still fresh. It’s in many ways a cleaner experience.

Releasing one episode every week, as long as the show is popular, is also great. It allows a culture of discussion and speculation to thrive. People can debate their interpretations of what has happened and where it is going next. That doesn’t happen so much when the whole season drops at once, because the viewers are not in sync. Instead of theories, you get spoilers.

But mixing the two models and dropping half a season at once in my mind is the worst of both worlds. You get neither the week to week community of viewers, nor the satisfaction of seeing a complete story. People are not going to be visiting the blogs and message boards to discuss episodes 1-6 of The Tick for the next six to eight months. You need a regular infusion of new content to keep that fan culture alive.

I was super disappointed when I finished episode 6 and found no more episodes waiting for me. The show is great, but either let me see it all, or make it a weekly event that I can look forward to.

I like the move, honestly I’m tired of all the binging (and I wish more shows would do it) - it’s stressful when the entire season of a new show is released and you don’t have the time to binge it immediately.

Maybe you watch a few episodes, but you can’t talk about it with anyone without both parties being aware of what they have seen and how it compares to the other person (and perfectly remembering the specifics). You can’t Google a minor plot point from an early episode for fear of seeing some jackass spoil the ending of the season. You can’t look up an actor because IMDb will tell you how many episodes they’re in and you start doing a mental countdown to their death.

What’s funny is that these apply far less to a more light-hearted show like The Tick. Which, indicentally, I watched all six episodes of today and enjoyed.
