I wanted this conversation to never end. It was a conversation, not an interview, and I can't stress enough how much I liked that. DVD seems like the type of man who gives out King-sized candy bars on Halloween. And Caitlin, your grandmother is a treasure.

That "Oh, no" was great. I love how Caitlin apparently thought she would get through this interview without her grandma going full grandma about her grandkids.

I rewatched Chitty Chitty Bang Bang just a week ago - great songs and I like the odd structure. That said, the plan to take over the castle was really shitty and badly thought-out.

Dick Van Dyke seems like the nicest old guy in the world. I remember watching Diagnosis Murder as a child and being genuinely offended whenever the villain of the week would try to murder Doctor Sloan in order to shut him up. Never had that reaction with Angela Lansberry. Ever. Lady was a reptile to me.

Maybe Mark and Amanda and Jesse et at wouldn't have been such frequent targets of attempted murder if they, I don't know, *doctored* some of the time, instead of running around Los Angeles playing Clue.
And you shut your goddamn mouth about Jessica Fletcher, or so help me…
ETA: Though, to be fair, I often find myself thinking: "Okay, Random Cabot Cove Murderer, you're doing it wrong! Anyone paying attention knows that you KILL JESSICA FIRST…

There's a Columbo episode (on Netflix now, check it out!) where he plays a murderer, and he is so believable, despite the little voice in your head saying 'you KNOW that's the nicest guy in the world, don't you'? He's just great.

Dick van Dyke is proving to be an increasingly rare case of being one of television's truly enduring father figures that hasn't been exposed for being a secret racist or statutory rapist (fingers crossed people!)

He occasionally rips people apart with chainsaws, but it's usually hitchikers, so it's fine.

Abe Vigoda isn't as old as people think he is. He was only 26 when he got cast as Fish.

I'm a young man, and I'd say a good 80% of the way to being a burnt-out, cynical husk of a human being.

And then I read about Dick Van Dyke being almost 90, and he is so full of good cheer, and it just seems like… that's the way life is supposed to be, and he deserves it.

And reading about his and Carl Reiner's friendship amazes me. The two of them created one of the most iconic, influential sitcoms of all time. It seems like those relationships usually don't outlive the collaboration and end very badly.

Everything about this should be sickeningly sweet… but it's just sweet.

I have a great job that demands a lot, but which gives a lot, I'm in amazing shape, the best of my life, I can travel to Madison or Chicago from Milwaukee for shows even on weeknights and be ready for work the next day, my girlfriend and I are adorable, aaaaaaaaand it's true about a fear of feebleness and being elderly. I don't want this to change drastically. Death never scared me. Even if it did, I'm religious, so it shouldn't.

Old age, though, and just being unable or unwilling to do the things that bring me joy now frighten me a lot. Once I get married and have children, priorities will change, but, dang it, I like my priorities right now! I hope that I make the transition without bitterness and learn to love what I have then instead of missing what I love now.

All of Van Dyke's answers were delivered in physical media, and all of Ruth Penzey's questions were accompanied by sick beats.
