Here's some comments for one of my favorite season 6 episodes:

*Whoa whoa whoa. You give "Johnny Cakes" a B- and this a B+? At least give it an A-, TVDW. Still - great write up here. The part about Paulie sitting down with Nucci and looking outside at the wind that just might have blown him there is especially touching. Wonderful interpretation.

*This episode ALWAYS makes me hungry for carnival food that is way too bad for me. I love it when Tony & Silvio come sidling up to Phil (isn't the Hairdo with him?); Tony's limping along (from twisting his ankle), fat mouth full of some pastry and Phil can't make out what he's saying.

*What is it that Tony has his hands on? Some vitamins or supplements? Big score there, guys. I think it's in the DVD commentary where the comment is made that they specifically did this to show just how desperate the mob was getting; trying to make money off of everything and anything. Can we list all the "trivial" items/products that Tony's crew have gotten into? I'll start: Vespa scooters, barber scissors (yet to be seen), imported provolone, vitamins, coolers (remember season 2 with Ritchie?). What else, guys?

*I love how you mentioned the ultimate decision that Christopher made when choosing Tony over Adriana. I had forgotten how this episode really brings that into focus.

*I still remember watching this episode and having my heart break in that flashback scene. Those performances were fantastic and I'm with those that believe it was a great idea to include it in the episode.

*Does Tony say, "And this comes from my cop buddies" when talking to Carmela about Adriana's disappearance? Always makes me chuckle.

*I think this is actually the last time we see Finn.

*My hat goes off (see what I did there?) to Father Jose for putting the screws to Paulie and trying to make more money from the criminals. Paulie's sure not having much luck with Catholic officials this season.

    *Hey, hey, there's Corky again.

*The look on Tony's face when Janice starts rubbing her neck at the dinner table is priceless. "Leave it alone, Janice." C'mon, Tony - you know that'll never happen.

*Probably one of the sweetest moments, I think, in the entire series is when Tony picks up his niece and spins her around. It's perfect after Tony talks with Melfi about being bored. Then he sees his young, toddler niece and he can provide simple amusement for her - something that adults have to struggle to find. It also gives us a suggestion as to what Tony was like as a father when his kids were younger.

In season 1 they stole some DVD players, which even in 1999 weren't very expensive/

Creepiest shit in the series: the quick cut of the holy figure in the Bing. Everything about it is fucking crazy.

Agreed.  I don't know if it's the music or the image or the quick cut, but every time I see it, I genuinely feel creeped out.

That freaked me the hell out the first time I saw it.  I read somewhere that it's kind of hinted that this is what the psychics were telling him about, isn't it?

I have to say I'm really excited for the write ups of the final 9 episodes.  I think there is almost no question that the final 9 episodes of the Sopranos are the greatest final 9 episodes of any show.  Some of them can even be argued for as the best episodes of the show.  I'm excited to see the comments on the series finale as well.  Anyone else have any other series where the last 9 to 10 episodes are all outstanding?

LOST.  I don't think there's really any debate about how well they stuck that landing. Nope, no debate at all.

Is there anything more pathetic (in the root meaning of that word) than people who are in as much denial as Christopher? To go from not drinking champagne after your wedding because of your plan to be a perfect dad to your unborn child, to shooting up with a stray dog, within the span of 1-2 days —- ooof. I get that that's the point, and it nails the amount of pity I feel for Christopher. A life of extremes.

"We have a bond", says a drunk Tony to a drunk Christopher after they shoot at some guys and steal their shit. Two days later, it's hard to make casual early-morning chit-chat. Let's talk about the time we went on a violent spree together again! There's that bond again.

Does anyone think The Sopranos is one of the funniest shows of ALL TIME? I die every time Tony paraphrases advice that Melfi gives him, to others. "Negative thinking can help bring this on!"

I'm not sure if I'm supposed to laugh at the way holy rituals, faith and money are intertwined in the Catholic Church, but boy, I can't help it. Let's cut some costs, or deprive the community of their beloved golden hat, while yelling: “Glory unto you, ghost man in the sky that created us all and pre-determines everything.” And who gets hurt at the end? Babies. Actual babies (and Janice, as per always). It's just one event in the community, but the show does a good job at subtly satirizing the whole thing. Watch out for that flying marble Mother Mary stripper who comes to you in times of trouble, complete with her own major chord entrance.

Paulie has to be the craziest motherfucker of them all. Bobby Bacala gets my vote for the 'nicest person who does the right thing'.

Also: some good points in the review/recap, but they get bogged down in too much useless pontificating. The ride you took me on with your analogies started to break down and throw off sparks around the 7th or 8th Big Idea.

The standard take on Bobby — that he's "the nice one" and that Tony cruelly robs him of his innocence after their fight in "Soprano Home Movies," is interesting to me.  It makes a certain amount of sense, given that the primary traits we see in Bobby are loyalty, compassion, sensitivity, and playing with trains.

But the more I think about it, the more I think that the consensus on the events of "Home Movies" stems from the sort of reasoning Meadow or AJ would have used in their brattiest, most overconfident moments of blame-shifting.  (We see Tony do this sort of thing in therapy often enough, too, but teenage Meadow and AJ do a better job of spelling it out in a clumsy, and therefore transparent, way).

In essence, the reasoning is this:  "It's not my fault!  I HAD to do what I did because so-and-so did such-and-such, and s/he's such a insert-insult it's not like I had a choice."

AJ and Meadow would always evade blame when caught in some misbehavior, there was always some excuse for their laziness or selfishness.  It wasn't Meadow's fault when she was caught at the party that trashed Livia's house, it wasn't her fault when she didn't get a summer job or register for fall classes in time, it wasn't AJ's fault that he trashed the swimming pool or got expelled or didn't get a job or needed so much money to go clubbing etc.

The audience, including their parents, saw through those excuses because they were so transparently self-serving and predicated on such an obvious falsehood:  that the kids had no choice.

But when Bobby kills someone for the first time, the fans generally see this as a bad thing that Tony did.  True, maybe in that precise moment Bobby was not quite in a position to say no.  (but, then, whoever is?  the right way is always harder than the wrong way, and it always involves sacrifice).  But in the larger scheme of things, Bobby put himself in that position.

This also applies to Breaking Bad.  SPOILERS AHEAD - fans point to the moment when Jesse kills Gale as something horrible that Walter does to him, as though Jesse doesn't deliberately choose to kill Gale and shoulders that responsibility himself.
