Interestingly enough, I first heard that on “AmeriKKKa’s Most Wanted” about 30 years ago and I am sure Cube wasn’t speaking from the police perspective. Also, holy shit that record came out in 1990 and I feel old.

I’m someone who spent a lot of time around police (my feelings about police are complicated) to do research for my writing and I’ve literally never heard this phrase.
But let’s break it down because it’s super fucked up. Thanks to my bonus mom and my bonus dad I grew up with a decent knowledge of guns. I even had to get a shotgun out with the intent to use when I was housesitting for them and someone was trying to break in.
If I were a police officer I would rather be carried by 6 than tried by 12. For me, personally, wrongly taking a life would be so much worse than losing my own.
Then her lawyers float the idea that Crutcher was a criminal, calling him a “certified gang member.”
Also a little to unpack here:
1) Is the certification exam for becoming a gang member hard?
2) Crutcher was high on PCP at the time of his death but that doesn’t justify his killing.
3) Jesus, don’t police have non-lethal weapons they can use?

  In a job where your duty is to protect and serve, this is the normal feeling for any person who is there to do their duty first and foremost and actually sees the people they protect and serve as people.
  If I were a police officer, hearing phrases like that would piss me the fuck off, because it makes me sound like I believe that I am my first priority and everything else comes after that. Which is exactly how this asshole Shelby acted. Even an irrational fear of a gun that didn’t exist in a situation where no apparent access to said gun didn’t exist is prioritized over the life of the man she murdered.
