I Really wanted to name my first daughter Isis but the wife wouldn’t let me “Because of her religion”. You know how Chistians can be with other gods like they didn’t steal half their mythology. Anyhoo, it’s a beautiful name.

People always get mad at me when I bring up the whole ‘virgin birth, sacrifice and resurrection is a millennia-old motif’ thing. Then they get really mad when I point out that the motif would have been particularly resonant for a people that spent time in an Egyptian cultural society and would have made sense to a Community Organizer Who spent time as a young Man in the Lower Nile Valley and Sinai. I mean, I believe in the divine revelation of God through Christ Jesus, but I also see the cyclical pattern that preceded and followed His revelation.

Too often people think you have to drink all of the koolaid to be a real believer. It’s stupid.

First, Isis is a lovely name. Your whole name is lovely, actually - it flows off the tongue. And I’m trying to figure out how you can mispronounce “Isis” - that is fucking nuts.

I can sympathize, though - my sister and I have “boy’s” names, which are actually family names. Common enough in Eastern and Southern Europe, but not so much in the US. But this does mean I get a lot of “Your parents wanted a boy *yukyukyuk*” bullshit.

I generally have to tell the whole damn complicated story every time someone wants to know why I have the name, but if they pull the “parents wanted boys” thing out, I just look them in the eye and say cheerfully, “Actually, my parents didn’t want me at all - I’m an IUD baby!”

I love the silence after that. It’s so deliciously awkward.

Lol you’re my kind of gal! I would love to be a fly on the wall for your IUD outro. So great. Haha. I actually love unisex names. My daughter has one. Thanks for the compliment on my name also! I love it too. I have two middle names as well. When people see my ID they ask me to pronounce my whole name and then without fail there is always a “huh? say that again,” that follows. Embrace your name nonetheless. I’m sure it’s a great one! Thanks for reading and sharing your thoughts with me!

Them: [Quickly pulls hand back and looks at you like you just grew a third boob while they simultaneously wait on you to change your answer.]

Because they slept through the Egyptian mythology section of history class in 7th grade. For a group of people who insist on casting themselves as ancient egyptians in movies, you would think, but nah.

Isis is a fucking beautiful name. I’ve always liked that as a name. It’s saccharine and reminds me of cats. Maybe that’s cause of association.

Besides, I refer to those people as ISIL. President Obama did a very smart thing in trying to change the acronym.

Thank you for the compliment. There was a teacher at my university that was trying to teach me about the association of Isis and cats. I’ll have to do a little more research on that. I agree with ISIL comment! Thanks for sharing!

Well from what I know, in Egyptian lore, Isis is usually associated with cats.

Plus, watching Batman: The Animated Series, Catwoman’s main cat was named, you guessed it, Isis. That’s where I actually learned about it as a yout.

People are truly stupid as fuck. Years ago, I took a class about ancient Greek arts and architecture and there was a slideshow showing ancient ruins on a Greek island, and one of the temples had the swastika motif. A student gasped and asked if the ancient Greeks were Nazis. The professor looked at this person and said, honey, the Nazi party didn’t exist thousands of years ago. Again, people are stupid as fuck. BTW I love the name Isis and she’s one of my favourite goddesses too. Sorry you have to deal with this BS everyday. Doesn’t Rihanna have a tattoo of Isis under her boobs?

I don’t blame you lol. I was browsing for Buddhist temples on Google map the other day and I saw a negative review/rating left by an American idiot who whined that there were Nazi symbols at this temple. I had to stop myself from roaring with laughter at this idiocy.

I was born on September 11 so I can sort of relate, especially when people say “Oh, that must be tough.” Why they think it’s tough for me, growing up when it was more associated with Rescue 911, is beyond me.

Isn’t it baffling the associations people make when it’s something negative that surrounds your name, birthday, etc.? So crazy! My cousin was also born Sept. 11th and we haven’t given him a cake that has anything to do with the tragedy to this day... go figure. Thanks for reading and sharing your thoughts with me!

I have always liked the name—probably b/c I had a boss with that name when I was in high school working for an activist organization, and she was exactly as you describe Isis(s) to be!

But, just want to say this:

To the asshole who continues to mispronounce a name that has been written in history since pretty much the beginning of time—fuck you, dude. Like, seriously. If you can’t pronounce “Isis” by now, I should hit you with one of the hundred books you could have read to learn how.

Is kind of unfair. Reading and knowing how to pronounce things are two different things. I have a pretty extensive vocabulary from reading, and my writing reflects that. But when I speak my husband corrects me not-infrequently b/c I am mispronouncing the words. It really sucks and has made me super self-conscious interacting professionally at times.

That is obviously not the author’s burden to bear, obviously. Just saying that even if someone is familiar with the name from literature, they might not know how to pronounce it. If you’ve said it out loud, that’s another story entirely.

Thanks for sharing and you’re right. I apologize if you felt singled out! I was moreso talking about people that know and have been taught, but are still too lazy to understand. My grandmother is from Costa Rica and has a hard time enunciating my name, but she does know how it should sound. Lol Thanks for reading and sharing your thoughts with me!

When I was younger and had just started learning about Egyptian mythology I said that if I ever had a boy and a girl I’d name them Osiris and Isis because they were sibling gods. When I was informed that they were also married I realized my mistake.

The point I’m making is Isis is an amazing name. Glad you haven’t let people’s judgment of it make you dislike your name.

I grew up in Toledo with a brother and sister named Osiris and Isis. Their father was a preacher I think, can’t remember exactly. I was good friends with Osiris in high school, I often wonder if his sister is having trouble with this too. In the early 90s, no one batted an eye at their names.

Never! I love my name too much. Thanks for sharing! When I was in 7th grade there was a Sirus in my class that I was friends with and of course when we got to Egyptian Mythology in the curriculum they teased us about loving each other. Lol All in good humor.

I can only hope that if we ever meet, I have the presence of mind to introduce myself as “SHAZAM!” (meant in fun)

My boss has a unique name and I am amazed that people who have worked with us for over 10 years still mispronounce it. I hate misspeaking someone’s name and usually ask immediately if I am saying it correctly.

Lol I hope we meet so you can introduce yourself that way also! You gotta make it count—theatrics and all. lol I think I would be so much less offended if they would ask me how to say it before butchering it and then BELIEVING that they are saying it correctly.

Regarding pronunciation, EYE-sis isn’t always the way it’s pronounced. There are many Latinas named Isis who pronounce it EES-ees (one of whom is one of my therapists).

Same, I’m actually a twin and my family is Latino so they call me EES-ees but I don’t really mind if people call me EYE-sis. I wasn’t named after the goddess but because my mom wanted a similar name as my twin. My sis name is Iris and I’m Isis. I just hate the fact when people discriminate you and don’t have the chance to even say why you were named the way you were. Every name has it’s story and we have to respect that.
