Halle’s kind of underrated. She’s known for being beautiful, which is great and all, but she’s a really good actress. She holds your attention and does well with good material. With bad material, well it’s not her fault that Catwoman was trash and the Storm character was under-written.

Honestly, I hope she does produce work for herself. It’s not like most producers are beating down doors to hire 50-year old women

Make your own products and you don’t have to beg to be hired to work on someone else’s product

I agree she’s a great actress. I’d like to say that it bothers me how there’s been some hate targeted at her from both the public and the media, especially when she had divorce and custody battles with 2 different white men that she married. People also claim that she’s only a famous actress because she’s light skinned and/or beautiful. Blegh.

We have people right here in these Kinja streets, who still give her shit about Catwoman and X-men; the worst ones like to bring up B.A.P.S. the same way we say #NeverForget about 9/11. People treat Halle Berry awfully.

I didn’t know she had a movie coming out this summer. I don’t watch a lot of mainstream tv, so I would have missed the trailers, but did this company do any digital promotions? Seem like the onus of the failure lies with the production company, which is no surprise to me.

    But good op-ed.

She’s also in Kingsmen 2, although that appears as more of a supporting role.

I’ve seen commercials of it from somewhere on TV, probably while fast-forwarding through DVR.

I noticed this is the first film distributed by Aviron, too, so great start for them!

Whenever I see an advertisement for Kidnap, I let out the kind of sigh I typically offer only when they tell me they ran out of spicy at Popeyes.

Man that is a terrible feeling. Should I just go? Maybe this is a sign that I shouldn’t be here. I should just make something healthy, like a turkey sandwich. Naw, I’ll just do mild and suffer.

On Halle, she’s always done a mix of genres, budgets and topics. Monster’s Ball was the last film she did that’s a “black film” (though IMDb says she has an indie film Kings with her and Daniel Craig about the Rodney King riots coming out). While I don’t think she should be put in a box, I think it’s those films, Jungle Fever, Monster’s Ball, Losing Isiah, where she’s given her best performances.

There’s elements of her career that remind me of Denzel. He’s another actor that I’m so hungry for a solid performance but he keeps doing shit like The Equalizer. I think that’s why I loved Flight so much, even though it’s not that great of a film, it was a return-to-form performance for him. Halle needs her Flight or Fences movie as well.

This was also during the era in which Berry starred in other movies like Jungle Fever, Losing Isaiah and, hell, even B.A.P.S. What happened to Berry making films like those?

    You mean the movies where she portrayed;

A crackhead, Another crackhead and a chickenhead?

God, I’m glad she’s not making movies like those anymore.

SIDEBAR: I know a lot of people hated Extant but I thought Halle was great for stepping outside the box a little more to take that project on.

Agreed. I didn’t like her comments about her Oscar win either; glad I’m not the only one who felt that her ‘lack of diversity’ anger was misplaced. That ward was for her performance in THAT movie; not a promise-literal or inferred, to employ or celebrate more actors of color in the future. Weird. I hope to see Kidnap(-ped)? this weekend. I still think Halle is a great actress but something is definitely missing from her career lately. And, I’m sure her comments about her Oscar win won’t help her plight.

Agreed: good to know that I’m not the only one who found her comments about her Oscar win both disturbing and misplaced. That award was for her performance in THAT movie. It was not a promise-literal or implied-to celebrate or advocate for more actors of color. Her career and the quality of he rmovies has lessened in recent years; which is sad cuz I think she’s a hell of an actress. But-pc nonsense aside, she’s also 50+ now; and things change for every woman-and how we are viewed after that. Even though she still looks great, I think that her age is a factor now; and she may not be as willing to take on risque or controversial roles now that she’s a mother.

“I sat there and I really thought, ‘Wow, that moment really meant nothing. It meant nothing. I thought it meant something, but I think it meant nothing,’” Berry explained.

I interpret her statement differently. I believe she means in terms of her win having done next to nothing to further opportunity and equity for Black actors in film—not that her historic win meant nothing to her personally or to our people. Also, it would be great if she would harness her disappointment in the lack of equity afforded to Black actors into projects that, purposely and purposefully, tell our stories from our many different points of view.

I think it’s time for the networks to bring back those telemovies. Halle Berry wants to make kickass movies, no matter how crazy they can get, tv networks have the money. DO IT.

If there were an alternate reality, she’d be with me (3 kids and a Great Dane!) and won her first Oscar for Introducing Dorothy Dandridge
