What am I supposed to do?

    Write about it.

Like, what the fuck? How is this a real quandary ? Retractions don’t exist? The people working under these celebrities will never find work again?

Right? That was an odd conclusion to come to. I can kinda see asking that about Kevin Hart because that’s they business or whatever and she just wanted to put together a nice fluffy piece of a celebrity in love.

But the other dudes? They out here knowingly infecting or raping women. Why just sit back on a potential story like that?

This was really a fucked up story of self rationalizations. I mean, really? Come on. You would of been better off leaving this article in the bin.

My sentiments exactly. It’s forthcoming but also reveals a fairly immoral disposition. The shoulder shrug “what was I supposed to do” question has a simple answer. It’s leadership. It’s hard. Not everyone does it (absolutely including myself), but that’s why there are so few leaders. You are venturing ahead into unfamiliar or unknown territory and if you are wrong then it very likely will not turn out well. But if it was known territory, then the decision is easy and no leadership is required.

      I’m with you.

Odd wording. Replace “magazine covers” with “my writing” and we’ve got the whole story.

Shoot out to Illtown all day, but damn Aliya this article was kinda wack. You just compared 3 alleged criminals with a guy who may/ or may not have cheated on his wife. Slow news day much?!?

Will next week’s installment be about: OJ Simpson, Suge Knight, Jayson Williams & Biz Markie: 3 men are stone cold killers and one man leaves the toilet seat up after he pees, yet all are BASTARDS! Find out which one is the bastardest of the bastards with Aliya S. King.

In a different way, the same thing applies to Bill Cosby. I heard rumors about his alleged inappropriate behavior when I was in my early 20s. But again, it was whispers. And again, what was I supposed to do? Research what I heard? Take my thoughts to the authorities?

I’m a Temple University Alum (class of ‘09! GO OWLS!) and to say Bill Cosby was a major figure is an understatement. Every year they had “Cosby U” for incoming freshman where he would speak. I saw him a few months before the Andrea Constand case was investigated.

A year later I took a black history class. Because of Hurricane Katrina we had displaced students who were allowed to take classes at Temple. One such student said she wanted to meet Bill Cosby. My professor, a short man who always wore suits, spoke with a North Carolina drawl, and loved me even though I was white and more conservative than a lot of students (more conservative than I am now, ironically) said darkly, “if you go out with Dr. Cosby make sure you bring a friend or watch your drink. And that’s all I’m gonna say about that.”

Philly girl here. I didn’t go to Temple, but damn, if the hero worship for Cosby was/still is staggering. And SO MANY people that I know (acquaintances, thankfully) are still Team Cosby re: his drugging and raping all those women. It’s fucking vile.

I hadn’t thought about the additional trauma he had caused to the countless students (and faculty) that admired him and that he mentored. He wasn’t just Bill Cosby on tv to these individuals, it was something more personal.

The gall of him to create and relish this wide-reaching role as a mentor, all the while knowing he was a predator and rapist.

Instead of keeping a low profile his arrogance was/is off the charts.

So sorry you went through this, and hopefully Temple has instituted some sort of ?? counseling for students to talk about this if it has effected them.

I imagine it would effect your trust in people- especially men, in authority figures, potential dates, etc.

But if my readers look at magazine covers for truth, that’s on them.

That’s a pretty fucked up thing to say. Unless you’re a fiction/fantasy writer, your readers are assuming there’s truth to what you’re writing. You can’t claim to be a journalist and then tsk-tsk your readers for believing what you’re reporting.

If you click on the link for statistics and then comb through to the statistic about the prevalence of herpes broken down by race - 50% of black people have herpes. When I think about the lovers I’ve had I think of all of them who have mentioned having herpes - 0. Now maybe I’ve been fortunate to have never had sex with anyone with herpes. Most likely, people just lie. Maybe this scandal will shed light and help people understand that if you have it, you should warn your partner. There are preventative measures that can be taken.

Just a clarification, but the charts were for herpes prevelance of Black people between the ages of 14-49. Not ALL Black people.

That being said, the numbers are definitely disconcerting. I knew 1 in 6 people in general have herpes, so in some ways it’s not too surprising.

Thanks but I’m not sure we were looking at the same charts. On this chart 14-19 had the lowest prevalence rate.

I think there’s a WORLD of difference between R. Kelly, Usher, Bill Cosby and Kevin Hart.

    R. Kelly, Usher, and Bill Cosby all did things that are not only despicable, but criminal. What Kevin Hart did was just shitty.

If he did in fact not reveal to partners that he had herpes and had unprotected sex I think it’s in the ballpark.

This is really a sad take on the whole “issues with not reporting on R. Kelly” concerns that many readers have had over these past few days. It seems nuts to me to want to be a journalist, but not want to shoulder any of the responsibilities of being a legitimate reporter. I just don’t understand. America is such as a sad, sad place to live in currently.

Also, I don’t really care much for Kevin Hart, but I’m wondering why he is even featured in this article? While cheating sucks, this is no way or shape similar to the other issues previously discussed. One can’t even argue that the surprised element is what groups his behavior with the others because no one is surprised he cheated, especially considering how they started off their relationship.

    R. Kelly raping underage girls, Bill Cosby drugging and raping women, Usher knowingly (? I’m assuming) passing on an STD - those are all illegal (I think knowingly infecting someone is? Maybe just for HIV?) and at the very least, morally repugnant. Kevin Hart cheating on his wife and / or fiancee? Is not illegal, and might actually be part of his marriage. As long as it is all consenting adults, I don’t care.

I feel like Hart doesn’t belong in this group. Cheating on your spouse isn’t nice, but ... IDK, that’s his business?

Complicit is word I like most

No one speaks out because power can crush any opposition. It can silence even strong voices. Then, it becomes hard to say something. Then, silence becomes encouraged. Then, silence is rewarded: more access, better jobs, more money.

    “It’s just business”

And it is, but people get swallowed whole. Entertainment is flushed with disgraceful, disgusting, immoral people: Errol Flynn, John Wayne, Bill Cosby, Woody Allen, Charlie Sheen - and that’s just off the top of my head. If you look at the behind-the-scenes people, the stories are darker with more money and more risk.
