Wow. Modern-day forced sterilization in the new Jim Crow. Wonder what the demographics of their incarcerated population is.

you think a voluntary procedure in exchange for a 30 day time served credit is forced sterilization?

I was just thinking, this sounds a hell of a lot like the Eugenics Boards from not-so-far back when. Same idea, even - they’re acting like they’re doing them and society a favor, somehow.

This may not be a popular opinion but I think this is a brilliant idea under some circumstances. Some people shouldn’t procreate (me being at the top of this list.)

I don’t think you should trade birth control for a sentence reduction - that’s unethical and untenable. This story is awful and this judge should be run out of office.

However, I don’t think it’s a terrible idea to provide voluntary free long-term birth control to inmates should they want it.

So I am big on family personally. I was part of a two parent household and I am providing one for my kids as well. I see value in planning out when you have children. I think my issue comes from the reduced jail sentence. people deserve to have kids and I think it’s a problem to incentivize them to become sterile so that they can be free. I think I would be ok if this was a free service that was offered to inmates but it had little bearing on the sentence term. That way we are providing a service still. Would that be a bad idea to anyone?

First off, that’s jacked up because the system locks away more minorities than anyone else, so this is basically government-subsidized eugenics. Secondly, they only get freakin 30 days credit??

Even if jail wasn’t disproportionately minority it would still be eugenics. Eugenicists were real big on sterilizing criminals and chronically unemployed.

This sounds like some controlled population crap. They are pretty much saying we dont want you to procreate because since you’re an inmate here and a criminal, then the children you have will surely turn out to be criminals. Thats sick.

If it’s anything like my hometown (it is, I checked the demographics), they’re having a problem with Fetal Alcohol Syndrome and meth addicts getting pregnant. So I get that. It’s the coercion that is the problem.

Yea I get that point too. But on the flip side of that no matter whats going on you cant really control who has a baby and tell them they shouldn’t, nor should they coerce like you mentioned.

I wonder how many of the dregs who support this are also fervent believers that Planned Parenthood was founded by a eugenicist? I have my suspicions....

I mean Sanger did support negative eugenics. I don’t really see what that’s has to do with modern day PP though.

That’s fair. I guess I should have said “Planned Parenthood is a eugenicist organization”.

This sounds like a eugenics plot designed to cull “undesirables” from the population. I wonder if this guy would advocate for mandatory sterilizations for criminals.

I feel as if this is an example of why history still matters. I just cant imagine if people knew the history of the forced sterilization of POC in America that people would agree to this, prisoner or not. Of course some people would but for others it would make them think and say NO

So why don’t women need to get a tubal if men need to get a vasectomy for the same credit? Is a tubal not cost comparative?

Is a tubal not cost comparative?

Correct. Nor is it comparable in terms of recovery and complications. I think the reason is that there’s only one option out there for men. If there were a birth control implant for men (like RISUG if it gets approval), I would bet they’d offer that instead [to coerce folks].

Tubal ligation requires general anesthesia, surgery, and considerably more down time. It’s more expensive and requires that the patient doesn’t have STDs like gonorrhea. It’s harder and much more expensive to reverse. Nexplanon can be inserted by a nurse practitioner in a few minutes under local anesthetic and has a shorter recovery time.
