If you were the Ambassador to Burundi, surely you’d know they were defecting.

But the thing about being the ambassador from Burundi is that pretty much no one who knows anything about Burundi in the U.S. views you as anything but the appointee of a likely illegitimate government with corruption problems that would make Rod Blagojevich blush.

The likely story is that these kiddos disappeared because they are seeking asylum.

Seems pretty obvious they’re seeking asylum in Canada. Hope everything works out for them.

This happens at the Junior Olympics fairly often, where folks want to claim asylum so they jumpstart the process by overstaying a visa. I hope they’re safe with family somewhere.

No no no! Overstaying a visa (and thus being in the country illegally) makes it more difficult to get asylum. When people use sports travel to claim asylum, they make the claim almost immediately.

Sorry wrong language, inappropriate use of a visa? Some people don’t make the claim right away though, I’ve noticed.

OK ya’ll settle down. All 6 missing including two seen going into Canada (I doubt kidnappers took 2 from Canada and 4 from the US.) They are staying in the US by choice. Good for them.

Exactly! And, if they can stay, good for us, too. They seem like exactly the sort of people we should want more of.

Assuming that they are trying to stay in the US or Canada (and not being held against their will), I wish them the best of luck. They seem like exactly the sort of people we should be trying to encourage to stay in our country.

Burundi is a scary place. I worked with a guy who was a teen soldier in Burundi when I was in my early 20s, although he was the same age he had a 1000 yard start of an old man. Glad these kids are getting out.
