Dammit, why couldn’t federal loans be included in this? I need my student debt wiped out, please.

It should ALL be wiped out. Education should be free. Along with health care. Dammit.

Good. If they can’t keep their paperwork straight, they can’t prove that money is owed to them.

The same should have happened in the mortgage collapse post-2008. Too many people lost their homes, despite alleged mortgage holders not having adequate proof that they did, in fact, hold the mortgages.

There was a New York-area judge who was tossing those cases left and right back then, wasn’t there?

Quite a few got tossed, especially for firms that had already folded. It just seems like a small number given the avalanche of defaulting that was happening.

I have $40K in loans held by a company mentioned in the NYT article. Anyone know how to go about challenging them?

If it’s showing on your credit, there should be contact information as well. I’d reach out.

Right, I’ve done a bit of research since posting and it appears that they’re not going to admit if they fucked up to an individual borrower. It also looks like one needs an attorney to navigate the process of challenging them. I have a consultation scheduled for this afternoon and I’ll report back if I find out anything helpful...

Glad to see this racket is being taken to task unlike the mortgage crisis.

I’ve got some private student loan debt that I know has been sold multiple times. Could I catch a break if they can’t produce paperwork to confirm who currently owns the debt? And if so, how would I challenge the ownership (or do I have to already be in default and have them come after me)?

The first step is to see if it’s showing on your credit report. If it is, you can file a dispute, which would require the creditor to prove the debt is owed and to whom.

That’s super helpful, thanks! It makes complete sense too, I just never thought of disputing a debt that I “know” I owe.

I am hoping that on one lonely night at the WH, Pres. Donald J. Trump (engorged on KFC original recipe chicken and a 12 pack of Coca Cola) wanders into the Oval Office and just writes up an executive order canceling all student loan debt for everyone because earlier in the day a guest on CNN said Donald is too stupid to write his own EOs and too chickeshit to get rid of student loan debt.

I think you just invented the only strategy that could work against Trump: reverse psychology. If CNN started advocating for alt-right policy, we’d be living in a utopia by the end of his first term....

Hey, I’d love your feedback on a proposal I just posted for a National Presidential Recall Referendum. I’m looking for input on any improvements it might need.

Student loans are such a fucking racket. I’m paying my brother’s (from the trade school he went to) and they deliberately make it as difficult as humanly possible to navigate.

Kind of wishing I had taken out private loans now. That’s something I never thought would happen.
